The Chaminade Silverswords are rolling. They've won 14 of their last 15 (dating back to last season), including a perfect 9-0 mark this year. The team has lost just four sets all season, including just one set loss in their perfect 3-0 start to PacWest Conference play. CUH leads the conference in hitting percentage, opponent hitting percentage, assists, kills, opponent's blocks and opponent's aces in their dominant start to 2018. This trip is their second time off the island this year. They played at Fresno Pacific in the NCAA Division II West Region Crossover a few weeks back. They begin a tough road trip at Biola Monday and then have to face Point Loma (6-5, 3-1 PacWest), Azusa Pacific (8-4, 4-0 PacWest) and Concordia Irvine (4-8, 3-1 PacWest) before returning home. Their opponent's this week have a combined 13-3 PacWest record this year. Their three PacWest opponents before this week - 2-8 in conference. This matchup is just the second all-time between these two sides, with the first being an instant classic inside of Chase Gymnasium last year. Biola prevailed in that meeting, but the Silverswords gave them all they could handle, pushing the match all the way to five sets before BU managed a 15-12 victory in the decisive frame.

Chaminade may be getting all the attention among the teams from the islands, but don't blink when it comes to the University of Hawai'i at Hilo. The Vulcans have had a great start to the season, already nearly eclipsing their nine-win total from the 2017 season. UHH features a few community college transfers and have gotten a big-time boost from UC Irvine incomer, Bria Beale. Containing Beale will be critical to Biola's chances in this matchup as the sophomore OH has had double-digit kills in five of her eight matches (two others with 9 kills) and is hitting .247 for the season. Hilo earned three-set sweeps of Dominican and Notre Dame de Namur to open conference play last week. The Vulcans will have a true litmus test to open this week with Azusa Pacific and Concordia Irvine on Monday and Wednesday before getting to Biola on Thursday. The all-time series between these two is split at an even 2-2. Biola beat the Vulcans 3-1 last season in what was their first meeting since 1992.

Hawai'i Pacific was the only Hawai'i school to dole out a loss to Biola in the 2017 season, when the Eagles went 3-1 against the teams from off the mainland. HPU beat BU 3-2 in Hawaii last season in a match when the Sharks managed 11 kills in their 15-10 set five win. That turned out to be just a blip on the radar for Head Coach Aaron Seltzer's team in their tremendous opening to the NCAA Division II era. It surely was more than a blip for the Sharks who had to work through a 7-21 campaign a year ago and had a .250 winning percentage in conference action. This season has not started too strong for HPU and they'll be looking to gain some momentum with a good run through the difficult Southern California road trip. Hawaii Pacific ranks in the bottom half of the conference in all but three major statistical categories. However, the three categories they're closer to the top in are very important ones - kills, hitting percentage and opponent's aces, so don't write them off just yet. Biola is 3-2 all-time against HPU, going 1-1 last year to begin their time as conference opponents in the PacWest.
ABOUT LAST WEEK: A tough start and strong finish categorized the Eagles' first full week of PacWest Conference competition. The Eagles lost in three in an extremely tight match at Point Loma (that could've been a sweep either way with no set being won by more than three) and then followed it up with a pair of quick wins up north vs. Academy of Art (3-0) and Holy Names (3-0).
Sierra Bauder stole the show with 32 kills (Biola's next best had 15) and an off-the-charts hitting percentage of .588. She also led the team with six blocks and was inside the top-3 in the conference in kills, hitting percentage and blocks. Biola is one of five teams in the conference with at least three conference wins and one or fewer conference losses. Rival Azusa Pacific still holds the outright lead in the standings with a 4-0 mark. The top seven teams in the standings will all play each other this week, with the four So. Cal teams and three Hawaii schools outpacing Fresno Pacific and the NorCal schools to this point in the season.
SPECTACULAR SIERRA: Every week it seems we reference how fantastic of a previous week Biola's senior middle blocker
Sierra Bauder had. Every week she's been in contention for PacWest player of the week. This week, she better get it. She was incredible in leading Biola to a 2-1 PacWest record and really made her presence felt with 15 kills in the Eagles' 3-0 win over Holy Names to end the week. Her hitting percentage of .647 in the week's middle match was the highest by any Biola attacker since 2015...oh yeah, then she went out the next day and hit a blistering .682. She now leads the conference in attack percentage, sits in the top-5 in total kills and should be duking it out with Azusa Pacific's Julianne Miller and Chaminade's Brooke Bell for this season's middle blocker spot on the All-PacWest first team (and possibly conference player of the year).
ROAD TO 1,000 (AND THEN SOME): Senior opposite hitter
Karly Dantuma comes in sitting on 989 career kills. She's is a major player in the Biola offense this year and should be able to cross the 1,000 career kill plateau within the first half of the season (likely this week). If she can hit the mark, she'd be just the
15th student-athlete in the 50-year history of the program to reach it. Dantuma also has a chance to eclipse 300 career blocks (252). If she does that she'd be just the fourth player in Biola history to have 1,000+ kills and 300+ blocks (
Becky Miller,
Amy Weststeyn, Michelle Warkentin).
SELTZER'S SEVENTEENTH: Seltzer is in his 17th season at the helm of the BU Volleyball squad. He's the winningest coach in program history with an all-time mark of 439-137 (.762). He's never experienced a losing season during his tenure at Biola (or even come close, with his "worst" mark being 19-11). His teams have won at least 26 matches every year since 2010.
NEXT WEEK: vs
Concordia Irvine (9/26 at 7:00 p.m.); at
Fresno Pacific (9/28 at 7:00 p.m.)
AFTER THAT: vs. Azusa Pacific (10/3 at 7:00 p.m. - COME HUNGRY, 250 FREE Chick-Fil-A sandwiches); vs.
Dominican (10/5 at 6:00 p.m.)
