Eagles Paint A Better Picture

Biola beats Academy of Art in three sets to win second PacWest game.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. --- Biola Volleyball had its first peek inside of PacWest rival Dominican's gym on Friday night. The match was not against the Penguins, but against the winless Urban Knights of Academy of Art.

The Eagles were able to keep ART U out of the win column by posting an impressive 3-0 (25-16; 25-17; 25-19) victory to kick off their abbreviated Northern California road trip.

"I thought Academy of Art played really hard all night. They never stopped coming," said Head Coach Aaron Seltzer. "I thought our team was well-prepared and working hard and did a good job being ready for everything."

The first set was Biola's best set as it accumulated a match-high 16 kills and hit almost .500. That effort was spearheaded by six kills from sophomore Savannah Hilde. She also added a handful of digs and an ace to get BU off to a good start.

Biola won four of the first five points and never trailed or was tied throughout the entire set. The Eagles really turned it on at the end of the first frame, winning eight of the final nine points to lock down their largest margin of victory of the night.

The second set was not great offensively for either team, with the two sides combining for just 19 kills while hitting 18 attack errors. Biola was able to overcome its less-than-perfect attack by continuing its strong night defensively.

"This was one of our best receiving matches," said Seltzer. "They were serving us really hard and our girls did a great job. The passing was on point."

Sami Hover and Kaitlin O'Brien of course anchored that defensive effort with 13 digs and 10 digs, respectively. Both players also had two service aces, which also led the team.

Biola won 11 of the first 15 points of the second set, which ended up being necessary to help them outpace a later run from Academy of Art that got the Urban Knights within four. Sierra Bauder had a strong second set, recording five kills and two blocks to lead the Eagles to their 25-17 victory.

Bauder was great again throughout the match as she ended the evening with a team-high 12 kills, hit .647 and played a role in all three of Biola's blocks.

The third and final set was much closer to form for Biola, and it also saw Academy of Art find its groove offensively. The Urban Knights recorded a match-best 13 kills and hit their highest percentage of the night as they fought to fend off elimination.

ART U got as close as one point at 19-18, but Biola was able to win six of the next seven to lock up the match. The final five points saw Biola flex its muscle a bit, all coming via BU kills, including two from Bauder and two from Brinley Beresford.

Beresford had a team-high 20 assists, piled on seven kills and added a pair of blocks to lead Biola's bounce back performance.

The win pushes the Eagles to 6-4 (2-1 PacWest), while ART U falls to 0-12 (0-4 PacWest). Next up for Biola is Holy Names on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. The Hawks went five with Concordia Irvine on Friday night before dropping the match and falling to 2-8 (1-3 PacWest).
