Close But Not Quite

Biola was in every set, but ultimately falls in three to PLNU.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- Unfortunately for Biola, Point Loma's Rachel Schlect chose Tuesday night to have a career night, and that made all the difference in a very, very close match, allowing the Sea Lions to sweep the Eagles, 3-0 (27-25; 25-23; 25-22).

The first set was a hard one to swallow as Biola was the better team thoughout, but an incredible individual START from Schlect helped the Sea Lions steal the frame, 27-25. The freshman outside hitter had seven kills and three digs in the first set alone to bring Point Loma back from down 21-15 to the eventual set win.

The second set was a flip of the script, where Point Loma was the team that was rolling like a machine throughout and Biola had a tough time ever getting started. The Sea Lions did not make a single attack error in the set until they already had double-digit kills and led by as much as eight. However, Biola did show some life at the end of the set, battling off six set points before a setter dump gave PLNU its 25-23 win.

The third set was much closer to the first as both teams traded small runs and no one took a huge lead, leading to a very tense final few points. Biola took advantage of a handful of late service errors by the hosts to push the issue, but ultimately a few BU attack errors helped Point Loma clinch the match with a 25-22 tally.

Schlect carried the Sea Lions throughout, racking up 16 kills (5.33/set), which was about two more per-set than her season average. For the match, the Sea Lions outhit Biola by nearly .100 and only hit into five Biola blocks to help them avoid costly hitting errors.

Sabrina Winslow had a great match for BU, racking up nine kills, seven digs and a pair of blocks. Karly Dantuma had eight kills and Christina DenBoer nine, but outside of that it was slim pickings for BU throughout.

PLNU did a great job guarding Biola's typically dominant middles, which also could've made the difference between a few points here and few points there, which makes all the difference in a match like this.

Biola will look to shake this one off quickly as they head up north this weekend for road contests at Holy Names and Academy of Art. The Eagles' season record now sits at 5-4 (1-1 PacWest). HNU and ARTU is a combined 1-17 (0-4 PacWest) so far this season.
