More Eighth-Inning Magic

Colton Worthington hits a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning to push Biola to an 10-8 victory in game one.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After senior Ricky Perez knocked in the only run of a 1-0 win on Friday, yjr Biola Eagles pulled the carpet out from under the Point Loma Nazarene University Sea Lions for the second time in as many days the Biola by pulling ahead in the bottom of the eighth inning.

With Point Loma holding on to its 8-6 lead from the sixth inning, senior Colton Worthington hit a grand slam with one out in the eighth inning to turn a two-run deficit into a 10-8 advantage for closer Daniel Jang to lock down in the ninth. Worthington's homerun was the first of two on the day and came against Sea Lions' closer John Balliet on a 1-2 fastball at the belt.

The game did not appear to be in need to late threatrics from Biola when the scoring started. The Eagles took a mile from the two errors surrendered by the Sea Lions in the bottom of the first inning, scoring the first two runs against Trevor Abshire on errant throws before taking a 4-0 lead on a two-run homerun from River Fawley.

The score would stay that way until the top of the third, when Point Loma got three runs against Eagles' starter Dallas Burk. Burk had difficulty finding the umpire's strike zone from the start of the game as it appeared he was not going to get the calls he wanted by attacking the bottom half of the zone in the way he accustomed to.

But he did battle to get out of the top of the first inning without allowing a run after the Sea Lions loaded the bases with no outs and was left with a no-decision after the offense picked him up in the fifth.

The Eagles scored twice in the fifth with the benefit of just one hit to tie the score at 6-6. Point Loma starter Trevor Abshire was removed four batters into the inning after getting just one out and was followed by Ernesto Romero, who walked in two runs.

Despite allowing PLNU to take a brief lead near the end of the ball game, the Eagles got quality innings again from bridge reliever Joey Leavitt. Leavitt (2-0) gets credit for the win after going 3.1 innings in relief of Burk and surrendering just two hits.

After the Eagles scored four in the eighth to turn the game around, Daniel Jang closed out the ninth on 11 pitches while allowing one baserunner to reach. It was Jang's 11th save of the season, making him the national leader for saves in NCAA Division II baseball. Chase Wheatcroft at Stanislaus State is second with 10.

This is the 16th time that Biola has scored seven runs or more in a game and the fourth-straight time the Eagles have scored at least seven runs in the second game of a PacWest series.

Unfortunately for Biola, there would be no eighth inning in the second game Friday because Sea Lions starter Wyatt Shackleford ensured the game would end in seven innings as it was scheduled.

Before the game ended with a final score of 2-1 in favor of Point Loma, it appeared the Eagles may take their third-straight game of the series because of a great start from Devin Sutorius and another blast from Worthington.

Worthington gave the Eagles a brief lead with a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth inning while Sutorius went five strong in his first start of the season. He struckout five on 83 pitches and handed an 0-for-2 line to the Sea Lions' best hitter in Tyler Flores.

But Point Loma would tie the game with two outs in the fifth to prevent Sutorius from getting the win and later got a homerun from substitute third baseman Justin Ledgerwood to open the door for Shackleford to get the complete game win.

After the doubleheader split, Biola is 20-9 overall with a 12-7 PacWest record while Point Loma is 18-14, 14-9 PacWest. The Eagles will try to win the series during its fourth and final game on Saturday morning. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
