Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles fought tooth and nail to try and win their third game of the series against the Point Loma Nazarene University Sea Lions and seemed only a break or two away from closing the 4-2 and 5-2 gaps. But the Sea Lions would hold off the Eagles at every turn and even absorbed a Jerron Largusa two-run homerun in the bottom of the ninth to win the game 5-4 and earn a series split with Biola.
After winning the first two games of the series, Biola ends the weekend with a record of 20-10, 12-8 PacWest. With Saturday's win, Point Loma pulls a game ahead of the Eagles for second place in the conference at 19-14, 15-9 PacWest.
The Sea Lions kicked off the scoring in the second inning on a RBI single from Adam Rios, and then they added to their total in each of the next two innings. Eagles' starter Wyatt Haccou buckled down in the second and third innings to limit that damage to just one run in each frame. He got back-to-back outs in the second to strand two runners and a got out of danger with a strikeout in the third.
Haccou's effort kept the Eagles in range to tie the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning, aided by two Sea Lions errors. With runners at first and second, Jacob Portaro lined the ball up the middle to score the first run and get his first of three hits on the day. The Eagles pushed across the equalizer on a throwing error by third baseman Justin Ledgerwood that scored
Ricky Perez.
Ledgerwood would redeem himself the very next inning with a leadoff double to set the table for shortstop Adam Rios to hit a two-run homerun to right field and put the Sea Lions ahead 4-2.
Despite seeing his pitch count swell over 110 pitches, Point Loma starter Stephen Young neutralized Biola's scoring opportunities in the fifth and sixth by stranding a man at third in both innings. The Eagles loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth with two outs on a Ryan Gallegos 11-pitch walk, but Young got an 0-2 count against Ricky Perez and eventually forced a flyout.
The most influential play in the game came in Biola's next at-bats, when Jackson Collins smashed a line drive to right field with the bases loaded and one out. After catching Collins' ball, the Sea Lions outfielder John Balliet launched a rocket toward home plate that allowed catcher Jarrett Lindsay to double up Colton Worthington and end the inning.
Had Worthington scored and Largusa's homerun still occurred in the ninth, the game would have been tied at 5-5.
The Eagles will hit the road again for their next PacWest series. Biola will travel to Riverside on Thursday to play the first of four games at California Baptist. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
