Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Vulcans Power Past BU

Hawaii Hilo continued its strong season with an 8-1 win at the BTC.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Men's Tennis returned home on Monday to kick-off a busy week. The Eagles had the tough test of facing the top ranked team in the NCAA Division II West Region, Hawaii Hilo.

It's the Vulcans' second year in a row making the trip out to La Mirada to face the Eagles, after taking last year's battle, 7-2. Hilo managed to get the win again in this one, 8-1.

The two teams split doubles fairly evenly, with the Vulcans claiming an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles and 8-3 with at No. 2 before the Eagles managed a gritty 8-6 victory in the third flight. Lucas Lee and Logan Blair were the ones holding down the number three spot on this day, earning their first win together this year.

The Vulcans won the first three singles matches to finish in straight sets in order to clinch the match win at 5-1. That did not stop the Eagles from battling in the other three singles flights as two of the final three matches on the courts were forced to a tiebreaker to declare a winner.

Joe Turnquist was one of the final three Eagles on the courts. He did not get into a match tiebreaker, but put up a valiant effort in his second set to win four games before his opponent managed the win.

The two tiebreakers happened to be on Lee and Blair's courts. The duo rode the momentum of their big doubles win right into singles play where Lee won his first set 6-1 and Blair won his first set, 6-0. Both opponents took the second set to force the match tiebreaker, which was played in place of a full third set since UHH already had won the match.

The Vulcans managed a pair of 10-5 wins in the tiebreaker to spoil what was setting up to be a pretty good singles showing from BU.

The loss drops Biola to 3-10 on the year and allows the Vulcans to improve to 11-1 overall.

The Eagles take a break from PacWest Conference opponents to host Pacific Lutheran at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
