Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Concordia Comes Out Swinging

Biola suffers an 8-1 loss to CUI in its first PacWest matchup.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. --- Biola Men's Tennis had its first chance to play some PacWest Conference competition on Thursday afternoon as the Eagles battled another set of Eagles, a familiar foe, Concordia University Irvine.

The bad Eagles came away with an 8-1 victory to drop Biola to 0-2 and help CUI improve to 2-0 in the young season.

The men's match and women's match were played simultaneously, with the men starting with singles and the ladies pairing up for their doubles competition. It was tough sledding for the boys all day, but Quentin Lau was able to usher in one bright spot with a win at no. 6 singles.

It's the first match win of Lau's career and the only win for Biola so far this season. The freshman won his first set 6-2, dropped the second 6-4 and then played a full third set and came away with a 6-0 victory to seal the match.

Derek James, playing in the no. 2 spot, also managed to force his way to three sets in singles, but he came up just short with a 6-2 loss to Nakita Katsnelson in the decisive frame. Katsnelson is a junior from Ukraine in his first season with Concordia.

All three doubles matches were competitive, even though the Eagles already knew they had no chance to win the match since CUI took five of six singles.

The No. 1 matchup was most intriguing as the all-star team of Lucas Lee and James made for a very close match that ultimately ended up in favor of CUI in an 8-4 result.

Biola will get back into action Saturday at 10:00 a.m. as it seeks its first win of the year in a road matchup with UC Riverside.
