Hawks Down Biola

Both tennis teams get a loss in their first competition of the year.

EL CAJON, Calif. --- The Biola women's and men's tennis teams opened their season on Saturday against stiff competition, Both sets of Eagles faced an NAIA-ranked team and former conference foe in the San Diego Christian Hawks and came away with losses in their first match of the season.

In the women's match, the team scoring started in a way that overshadowed the efforts of Tinisee Kandakai and Lily Waterhouse in their 8-4 victory over SDC's third doubles team. San Diego Christian put the match away early by taking all five points on its way to an 8-1 win.

Kandakai and Ally Torres had the most success for Biola in the singles matches, pushing their counterparts on the No.8 NAIA team to make big shots in key situations.

Torres pushed her counterpart to the brink by taking the second set 6-4 and pushing the third into an extended tie break. But Paula Vazquez finally put two points together after the two were tied 9-9 to earn yet another point for the home team.

Kandakai also made her opponent win a tiebreak in the decisive second set and was the only Eagles besides Torres to win 10 games during her singles matched.

Biola took an early lead in the men's match thanks to strong showing from their No. 1 and No. 2 teams. Derek James and Lucas Lee controlled their match against SDC's No.1 pairing 8-5 while the newly formed team of Philip Westwood and Quentin Lau pulled through on a tiebreaker to seal two early points for Biola.

The lead would not last though, as the Hawks rattled off wins against the Eagles top five singles players. Biola had to wait until the sixth matchup, when Joe Turnquist ended the day on a positive note by winning, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.

It's a difficult way to start the season for both teams," said Head Coach David Goodman. "Hopefully we can learn from this experience and make some improvements."

The women's team jumps right into conference play on Tuesday by welcoming Cal State LA to the Biola Tennis Center at 2:00 p.m. The men's next match will Thursday, Feb. 8 against Concordia.
