PacWest Begins With A BANG!

Three homeruns and more dominance by Austin highlight game 1 win.

WAIPAHU, Hawaii --- Biola University Softball earned its first PacWest Conference victory in its very first conference game as the Eagles upended the Chaminade Silverswords 8-3 in the first game of a Monday evening doubleheader.

The game was close for a long time as both starters were effective. Terri Van Dagens allowed three runs over four innings for the Eagles and Chaminade's starter pitched into the sixth inning, only allowing BU three runs through the first five innings of her outing.

Two of those first three runs came courtesy of Kayla Neff's first homerun of the season. The sophomore left the yard in the top of the fourth inning to push across the Eagles' first two runs of the game and cut into what was a three-run deficit.

Biola would not stay on the negative side of the score line for too much longer though as the game got tied up in the Eagles' half of the fifth inning. Noel Balderston, in her first game back from injury, took a leadoff walk and later would score on a Hailey Boyett sacrifice fly.

Right after that half-inning Paige Austin entered the contest. The freshman would finish the game, ultimately getting the win. She was masterful, only allowing one baserunner (a HBP) over her three innings of work, while striking out six.

The reason she was able to get the win is because the wheels began to fall off for her counterpart in the top of the sixth inning. The Eagles got to the Chaminade starter for three runs in that frame, with all three of them coming on a first-pitch homerun from pinch-hitter Ari Gonzales.

Gonzales brought in herself, Neff and Areana Ramos to blow the game open at 6-3 Biola. Ramos would hit one over the fence herself in the seventh inning to add two insurance runs before Austin  came out to end things in the bottom half.

The freshman fantastic struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to clinch the historic first PacWest win for the Eagles. The game is also the eighth in a row that Head Coach Lorie Coleman's team has won, leaving their record at 12-3 (1-0 PacWest) through the first 15 games of the year.

Biola and Chaminade had a second game scheduled for Monday night, but the game was suspended in the bottom of the fourth inning due to rain. Biola holds a 7-5 lead in the contest, which is slated to be completed before Tuesday's scheduled 6:30 p.m. PT doubleheader between the two teams. Live statistics are available here and live audio of the game can be found here.
