Eagles Complete The Sweep

Biola finishes with a 9-7 win in the suspended game two from Monday.

WAIPAHU, Hawaii --- This will definitely go down as the longest game of the year when all is said and done. At the very least the longest time elapsed between start and finish, since Biola and Chaminade softball split play between two days before the Eagles earned a 9-7 victory in the second game of Monday's scheduled doubleheader.

The two teams played 3.5 innings on Monday before rain became an injury concern and forced play to be suspended with the Eagles leading 7-5 headed into the bottom of the fourth inning.

A majority of that early damage came courtesy Missy Poti for Biola and Jackie Najera for Chaminade. Poti drove in two runs in the first inning with a two-out, two-strike single and she added another two-run single in the top half of the third to give her more RBI than innings completed.

Sandwiched between those hits was a Jackie Najera grand slam that turned a 3-0 Biola lead into a 4-3 deficit after two innings played. Poti's hit put Biola back on top in the third and was followed by a pair of Biola sacrifice fly that extended their lead to 7-4.

Chaminade tacked on one more run before the game was halted.

Once play resumed it was the Silverswords who struck first to tie the game at seven in the bottom of the fifth inning. One of those runs came off a Najera bases loaded RBI hit-by-pitch. The freshman for CUH came up to bat four times in this game and coincidentally enough had the bases loaded on all four occasions.

With the game tied, Biola's offense began to churn into motion quickly in the top of the sixth inning. The first two runners reached to set up a good RBI opportunity for Kayla Neff. Neff flew out, but aggressive base running by Haley Martinez forced an errant throw from the outfield that allowed her to score the go-ahead run on the play.

Areana Ramos would score on the very next play as Poti came through with another RBI hit to get her total up to five and help give Biola a two-run buffer.

The Silverswords got the bases loaded again in the sixth for Najera as they threatened to tie the game once again. However, this time Paige Austin got the better of the batter and induced an inning-ending lineout.

Austin stayed in the game for the bottom of the seventh and ended up striking out two, including the game's final batter, in order to earn her second win of the series and seventh on the season.

The win helps Biola to a 13-3 overall record and 2-0 start to PacWest Conference play. This is only the third time in the 25-year program history that Biola's won 13 of its first 16 games (2005, 2006).

The two teams will now begin their regularly scheduled Tuesday doubleheader with Chaminade. The first will begin just after 7:00 p.m. PT. Follow the game with live audio at this link and live stats here.
