Solid Team Performance

Clutch Hitting and gritty pitching help Biola win the battle against University of Saint Katherine.

POWAY, Calif. --- Biola finished its pre-PacWest non-conference games on Tuesday with a gritty road win against the Saint Katherine Firebirds.

The Eagles got good pitching performances and late scoring in the contest, just like they had in their blowout victories earlier last week. But Biola scratched and clawed for this 4-2 win and needed every bit of composure it got from all over the diamond on Tuesday.

This was a solid team win today," said Head Coach Jay Sullenger. "We had a big at-bat from Joey Magro that got us the lead and more good at-bats from Jerron Largusa. But the story of the game was the start from Wyatt Haccou and the bullpen. Every guy threw very well in a good, competitive road win."

The Firebirds demonstrated why they came into the game with a record of 10-6 by holding the Eagles scoreless for the first five innings. Starter Kyle Huett limited the Eagles to one-hit over those five inning and never let an Eagle reach second base safely.

In the meantime, Haccou had to battle with everything he had to keep the Eagles within one run through four innings and did a phenomenal job. The senior righty allowed a run in the second on two hits. But after a perfect third inning, Haccou stepped up with runners at second and third with two outs to strikeout Jace Young to keep the score at 1-0.

He finished with six strikeouts over four innings and only walked one batter.

Relievers Joey Leavitt and Josh Ludeman continued to rack up the K's for Eagles pitchers in the next two innings by fanning two Firebirds batters each. Saint Katherine hitters finished with 13 strikeouts on the evening and only mustered two hits in five innings against the Eagles' bullpen.

Biola finally got to Huett just as he was starting his third time through Sullenger's lineup. Huett made a mistake by allowing Ricky Perez on the base paths with two outs via a hit by pitch. Immediately after Perez stole second to get into scoring position for Joey Magro, Magro simply beat Huett by tripling to deep right field.

With Perez bringing home the tying run, a throwing error allowed Magro enough leeway to advance the final 90 feet and give Biola its first lead of the game at 2-1.

The Eagles kept adding on with runs in the seventh and ninth on a Jerron Largusa double and Anj Bourgeois sacrifice fly.

Daniel Jang came in to close things out in the ninth and picked up the 20th save of his collegiate career with two strikeouts and a groundout on 14 pitches. Jang had set the new program record for career saves last weekend when he got his 19th against Bethesda.

Next up for the Eagles is their first two PacWest series against Hawai'i Pacific and Hawai'i-Hilo. Biola travels to the big island to take on the HPU Sharks on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 4:00 p.m. (PT).
