Pitching is King

Biola splits two pitchers’ duels on Saturday with Hawai’i Pacific.

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i --- It did not take long for the Biola Eagles to settle into their new conference on Saturday. The Eagles scored a run in their first inning of PacWest competition and rode strong pitching to a 4-3 win over the Hawai'i Pacific Sharks before getting the short end of the stick in another pitchers' duel in game two.

Both teams end Saturday's doubleheader with a PacWest record of 1-1 with two more games to play on Monday. Head Coach Jay Sullenger's team also finishes the week with a 7-3 record.

After getting two quick outs in the first inning of game one, the Eagles got on the board in a hurry with a Colton Worthington walk and a Jerron Largusa triple to take a 1-0 lead.

Micah Beyer held that lead for the next three-plus, building the foundation for his second win of the season with precision fastball command. Beyer collected five strikeouts over the first four innings and finished with seven overall in seven innings. The senior righty did not walk a batter and scattered seven hits that resulted in two runs.

Both of the Sharks' runs against Beyer came in the fourth inning to give Hawai'i Pacific a brief lead. Wyatt Hoppie and Kreston Woods both hit the ball softly up the middle to plate the runs while HPU got four hits in the inning.

But the Eagles ensured that the Sharks lead was incredibly brief, if not momentary. In the very next half-inning Joey Magro smashed a 2-0 fastball to right-center to put the tying run 90 feet away with just one-out. Colton Worthington immediately provided an extra-base hits of his own to tie the game at two and to give Biola a chance to take the lead back in the inning.

Worthington was still on the basepaths four batters later. But Anj Bourgeois made the wait worthwhile by getting a two-run single with two outs to put Biola up 4-2.

Beyer held onto that lead for two more innnigs and was helped by another scoreless frame in relief from Josh Ludeman. Despite allowing a run and three base runners, Daniel Jang got his third save of the season and ended the game with a swining strikeout of leadoff hitter, Tanner Takunaga.

Eagles pitchers recorded seven strikeout against the Sharks' one through three hitters in game one.

Hawai'i Pacific had more success overcoming the Eagles early lead in game two. Worthington cracked his third homerun of the season in the third to stake Troy Stainbrook to a 1-0 lead.

But Sharks third baseman Micah Layosa got the first of two run-scoring hits in the fourth to put HPU up 2-1 with a double. Layosa finished game two 3-for-4 with all three RBI's for his team.

Biola put five runners in scoring position from the fourth inning on, but could not push any of them across. The Eagles best chances came in the sixth and eighth innings when Colton Worthington stole second and Jerron Largusa reached third base, respectively. But Biola hit itself out of both chances with playable balls up the middle.

Stainbrook ends up getting the tough-luck loss after going five and two-thirds and allowing just three runs. The Eagles' relievers kept the game close in the late innings with 2.1 scoreless, but Biola was unable to score against Joshua Savea, who went 2.1 IP for his second save of the season.

The Eagles get a day's break before returning to Hans L'Orange Park for another doubleheader on Monday. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. (PT).
