Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Cougars Claw Past BU

Men's Tennis falls 9-0 in first match vs. No. 5 APU.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- For the first time as PacWest Conference members Biola and No. 5 Azusa Pacific Tennis squared off at the Biola Tennis Center on Monday afternoon. The Eagles and Cougars battled through windy, rainy and 50-degree temperatures before APU eventually earned the 9-0 win.

Singles were up first and Azusa Pacific stormed through those winning all six in straight sets.

Joe Turnquist, playing in the No. 5 position, gave the best battle by forcing his opponent into a breaker in the second set. Turnquist came from behind and took a 6-5 lead in the set to force the breaker and get in good position to force a super breaker, but his opponent won the next game and  eventually clinched the match with a 7-2 win in the breaker. The final 15 minutes or so of that match were played under the dripping rain.

Doubles was difficult for Biola also, as the Eagles' three pairs could only win two games. APU got 8-0 wins at No. 1 and No. 3, with Philip Westwood and Quentin Lau grabbing two game at position two.

The loss means that Azusa Pacific is guaranteed at least five points out of men's tennis in the Cornerstone Cup. The two sides meet again (at Azusa) on March 23.

Azusa improves to 5-0 (2-0 PacWest) with the victory, while Biola falls to 1-5 (0-3 PacWest).

Biola hosts its old Golden State Athletic Conference rivals, Hope International, on Thursday afternoon at the Biola Tennis Center. The match begins at 4:00 p.m.
