Putting Up Zeroes

Biola earns three wins and puts up 18-straight scoreless innings in Tucson.

TUCSON, Ariz. --- Biola Softball completed its 3-for-3 trip to Tucson by defeating the Western Oregon Wolves 5-0 in the Eagles' third game of the day. Biola's pitching was lights out all day, ending the day on a streak of 18 consecutive scoreless innings after allowing just one run in the top of the first inning of their first outing.

Every Biola pitcher saw time on the bump on Saturday, but Terri Van Dagens was the only Eagle to get significan time in multiple games. The senior started against Lubbock Christian and Western Oregon and logged eight innings to pick up a pair of wins. She hurled all scoreless innings, allowed only three hits and struck out 10.

That set the tone for what Biola needed to accomplish in its final game of the day. After Van Dagens put up a zero in the top of the first the Biola offense quickly got to work, ensuring it would take the first lead.

Haley Martinez led off the game with a walk, got sacrificed over and then was immediately pushed home by the first of two Noel Balderston doubles in the game. Martinez was an excellent choice for leadoff in this game, as she would reach base three out of her four times to the plate and ended up scoring all three times.

The Eagles got just the one run in the first, but they added three more in support of Van Dagens just two frames later. This time it was a Ruth Munoz single that started the rally. This was followed by another Martinez walk and then a Jay Perez single. This set up a bases loaded, nobody out scenario for the hard-hitting freshman, Balderston. She came through with a bases clearing triple to extend the lead to four and make Biola begin to see the three-game sweep clearly in their sights.

Van Dagens came out for two more scoreless innings before handing the ball over to Paula Damas to start the fifth. Damas opened her day with back-to-back one-hit innings to keep the game at 4-0.

Karen Lieng pinch-hit for Selina Sherlin when Biola was hitting with two outs in its half of the seventh. Lieng came through with a single through the right side to send Martinez across the plate one more time and bring the game to its final resting place of 5-0.

Damas got a lineout, pop out and ground out to retire the Wolves in order in the seventh and set Biola up with its third win of the day, which will make for a very happy trek back to California.

The Eagles improved to 7-3 with their dominant day, while Western Oregon fell to 6-6 after the result in the nightcap.

Biola continues non-conference play this Thursday evening as it hosts Marymount California (3-11) for a doubleheader starting at 4:00 p.m.
