Boom Goes The Dynamite

Biola Softball explodes for 20 runs in run-rule sweep of Marymount.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Pitching. Hitting. Defense. You do all three of those well and you are sure to win some ball games. Biola Softball definitely managed that on Thursday night as the team extended its scoreless innings streak to over 26 innings, logged 24 hits (including two HR) and limited to one error in a pair of wins over Marymount California.

Biola won by run-rule in both games, meaning only five-and-a-half innings got played in game one and just four-and-a-half in game two. Biola shutout the Mariners 8-0 in the opener and scored nine runs in the bottom of the fifth to win game two (via walk-off homerun), 12-3.

The two wins have Biola as winners of five in a row and now position the Eagles with a 9-3 overall record heading into Friday's tough doubleheader test against Vanguard (14-0).

Tonight marked the triumphant return of Hailey Boyett, who had been out since the season-opening doubleheader vs. La Sierra back on Feb. 1. The junior was 6-for-6 with seven RBI and a homer in that series before getting injured on the basepaths late in game two. She was nearly as good in her return on Thursday, going 4-for-6, scoring twice, hitting two bombs and driving in four runs.

It was Boyett's at-bat in the third inning of game two that ultimately sparked the Eagles' offense for their bombastic finish to the game. She tied things up at three with a homerun (her second of the day) to immediately turn the tide back into Biola's favor right after MCU broke up BU's scoreless inning streak with three runs in the top half of the inning.

The first game was a combined shutout thrown by Terri Van Dagens and Paige Austin. Van Dagens earned her fourth win on the strength of four scoreless innings. Then Austin came in and was lights out, allowing just one hit and zero walks while striking out three in the final two innings.

Game two was won by Paula Damas who was in the contest in relief of the starter, Kaile Chavez. Damas was solid, tossing three zeroes and not allowing a single hit to the Mariners.

The offense came from all over for BU, but what was most impressive was the nine-run fifth inning that won the second game and sent Biola home early with its second doubleheader sweep of the season.

Boyett, Selina Sherlin and Areana Ramos all reached to load the bases for Kylie Velasco with no outs in the inning. The freshman doubled to bring home Missy Poti (pinch running for Boyett) and Sherlin. Ramos would also score on the play after an errant throw from the Mariners' shortstop.

That got the lead back in BU's hands at 6-3, but I doubt anyone was thinking of another run-rule win at that point. Another RBI double, this time from Tori Apodaca, widened the margin, still with no outs in the inning.

Then, with one out, Ruth Munoz legged out a single on what was meant to be a sacrifice bunt in order to load the bases once again. A Jay Perez single brought two more runs across the plate and now had everyone looking at the batter's box in anticipation of a walk-off as the lead grew to 9-3.

The crescendo happened when after a Boyett sacrifice fly brought the lead to 10-3, Sherlin clubbed her second homerun of the season to win the game for Biola at 12-3.

Sherlin and Velasco both ended game two with three hits a piece to carry the load for the Eagles' offense. After today's explosion the Eagles are back to hitting an incredible 3.43 as a team and the pitching staff's ERA was lowered to 2.42.

The Eagles enter Friday's highly anticipated doubleheader averaging 6.8 runs-per-game, while allowing just 3.4. Vanguard is averaging 6.5 runs-per-game, while it's staff has limited opponents to just 1.1 per contest and comes into tomorrow with a 1.06 ERA.

Biola and the Lions begin their battle at 4:00 p.m. at Freedom Field on Friday night. If you cannot be there to join us, please watch online at portal.stretchinternet.com/biola.
