Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Sea Lions Steal Singles

Biola suffers 7-2 loss to Point Loma despite being dominant in doubles.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Men's Tennis hosted its first home match of the year on Saturday as PacWest Conference foe Point Loma came to visit. The Sea Lions swept all the singles matches to take control of the match early, but Biola managed to win two of three doubles to force the final score to 7-2.

Biola did not go down without a fight in those singles matches, forcing two of them to go a full three sets before falling in the Sea Lions' favor.

Derek James won the middle set in the No. 2 position and freshman Logan Blair also claimed that middle set playing in the four spot. Blair gave his opponent everything he could possibly handle in the decisive third, before ultimately falling, 7-5.

Only two of the 12 singles sets were decided by a score of six games to none as the two teams battled for nearly three hours in singles play alone.

Then came the doubles, where the Eagles' pairings stepped up in a big way. Biola earned its wins in the top two doubles matchups and forced a close match in the third slot.

Derek James and Lucas Lee combined in the number one position. The men played PLNU's number one singles player and a man who did not appear in the singles play. The Eagles led by a wide margin throughout after getting off to a strong start and ended up with an 8-4 win.

The second doubles installment played out similar to the first and ended with the same final score. BU send out Philip Westwood and Quentin Lau to face a team that featured PLNU's number two and number six singles players.

The wins help both of those top Biola doubles pairing improve to 3-1 in what's been strong starts to the season for them.

The final match tally of 7-2 hands Biola its fourth loss of the year, falling to 1-4, while Point Loma picks up its second win to improve to 2-1.

The Eagles have one day off before they host Biola's biggest rival, Azusa Pacific, on Monday afternoon at the Biola Tennis Center. The men's 2:00 p.m. match and women's 4:00 p.m. match are the only athletic events on campus that day, so we really hope you can join us.
