Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Eagles Get First Win

Biola beats Chapman 8-1 to earn a sweet victory.

ORANGE, Calif. --- Playing in its final of four consecutive road matches to begin the season Biola Men's Tennis managed to get over the hump and get its first win of the year by defeating the Chapman Panthers, 8-1. It becomes Biola's first win over a NCAA school as a NCAA school.

"It was nice to get a win today," said Head Coach David Goodman. "We came out real strong in doubles and set the tone right at the start of the match."

The doubles effort was indeed admirable as Goodman's guys managed to sweep straight through the Panthers' starting six with 8-3, 8-5 and 8-2 victories at positions 1, 2 and 3. After spending one match with other partners Derek James and Lucas Lee formed the Eagles' top team once again and cruised to their first win of the season.

Logan Blair and Michael Vartuli combined for the largest doubles victory in their first win together in two times out.

Biola clinched the match early with a strong start to singles play. The team got a pair of 6-1; 6-1 wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles to wrap everything up swiftly. James held down the fort in the number two spot and Philip Westwood earned his first win in the three spot in the lineup.

Freshman Quentin Lau became the first Eagle with two singles wins on the season as he managed a 6-4; 6-1 victory in the six spot.

Lucas Lee had to work the hardest for his win in the number one spot. He battled the Panthers' first-year number one player Jacob Lee into a tiebreaker after the duo split the first two sets. Biola's Lee would get the win on the merit of a 10-3 tiebreaker score. The two number one players were evenly matched enough that they needed extra play to find a winner in the second set also.

"We are just trying to improve every day," said Goodman. "This is a step in the right direction and will hopefully help us for our home match against Point Loma on Saturday."

Biola improves to 1-3 overall with the win over the Panthers. Their next time out is an 11:00 a.m. match against the Sea Lions (1-1) this Saturday at the Biola Tennis Center.
