Scoring Drought in Riverside

Biola’s early shooting difficulties allow California Baptist to race to victory.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- No matter what Biola did on Saturday, it could not remedy its shooting difficulties and get back in the game against California Baptist University. The Eagles lost 80-35 after only making 12 field goals in the contest and lacking a scorer with 10 or more points.

The Lancers benefited from the fact that Biola faced one of "those days" in basketball where nothing seemed to fall. The Eagles took their only lead of the game at 2-0 on an early layup from Jazz Benn but still started the game by shooting 1-of-13 from the field.

Biola went 5:30 between field goals in the first quarter alone, as Benn knocked down at trey at the 2:25 mark in the period, but there was still plenty of optimism that the Eagles could fight through their early struggles and win the game.

The Lancers only scored six points through the first seven-plus minutes of the game, so Benn's three made it a one-point game at the time. The teams traded three-pointers with the next two baskets before the home team took a slim four-point lead into the second quarter.

While Biola proceeded to make two field in the second quarter, the Lancers improved on their shooting in the first period by hitting 40 percent of their shots, After the Eagles kept CBU within range by limiting the Lancers to three second-chance points in the first quarter, CBU added seven more points after offensive rebounds in the second quarter to help it reach a total of 20 in the period.

Benn made one of those field goals in the second quarter and led the Eagles with nine points at the half. But CBU kept the pressure on when their shots started to fall and played shutdown defense in the second half to limit Biola to a total of 35 points. Benn finished with 11 points as the Eagles leading scorer while senior guard DeMoria White was limited to just three points on seven shots.

Tatum Brimley's six second-half points was one of the few bright spots in the second half for Biola. The Eagles were outscored by 30 points in the final two periods and made six fewer three-pointers over that span.

California Baptist had four double-digit scorers and was led by freshman Georgia Dale, who scored 16.

The Lancers improve to 12-11 and 10-8 in the PacWest while Biola comes back to .500 at 11-11, 8-8 PacWest.

The Eagles will look for a quick rebound win Monday against Dominican, who also lost in a blowout on Saturday to Azusa Pacific. Tip-off in Chase Gym in scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
