LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola could not stop the torrid scoring of the Dominican Penguins on Monday.
Led by 27 points from guard Natalie Diaz, the Penguins averaged 23 points per period after the first three quarters and defeated the Eagles, 77-49.
The loss drops Biola to 11-12 and 8-9 in PacWest play. Dominican keeps its hopes of a berth in the PacWest tournament alive by improving to 16-8, 10-6 PacWest.
Despite a good performance from their substitutes, the Eagles had their share of difficulties on the offensive end of the floor for the second-straight game. Biola did not get its 10th point of the game until the 9:58 mark of the first quarter, when
Jessica Shill banked a three-pointer off the window just before the buzzer.
The trey finished off the Eagles' best run of the contest as Biola scored five-straight points against Dominican in the final 32 seconds of the first quarter.
The Eagles got good scoring from Tatum Brimley, Emma Newman and DeMoria White in the second period and might have climbed back in the game had it not been for Dominican's Alana Scott and Julia Razo. The three aforementioned Eagles scored all 17 of Biola's points in the second period, including 2-of-2 shooting from deep by Newman.
But Scott and Razo matched Biola's total all by themselves and Dominican had its best scoring quarter of the game to increase its lead over the home team by eight going into halftime.
In the second half, Diaz took over the offense for the Penguins and score 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting. She finished with 11 rebounds to wrap-up a double-double and was one of four starters in double figures on the night for Dominican.
The Penguins started the second half on a 7-0 run to push their lead to 25 and never saw it dip below 23 the rest of the game.
White and Brimley tied for the team-lead in scoring with eight points each while Mikayla Greens played huge on the boards and collected 14 rebounds. Biola ended the game shooting 27 percent while the Penguins shot 54 percent.
The Eagles will return to Chase Gym for their next PacWest game on Thursday. Biola will host the Point Loma Sea Lions with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
