Biola struggles to keep up with fast-paced Lancers on CBU's Homecoming

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- California Baptist University fans came out in full force on Saturday night for the school's annual Homecoming weekend, and the crowd of just about 5,000 people helped the home team to one of it's best shooting nights of the season. Biola just happened to be on the receiving end of their strong night to the tune of a 96-59 loss.

The large final deficit does not tell the entire story though, as the Eagles turned around from an extremely sour first 20 minutes to have a strong final 20 minutes, thanks in large part to an improved defense and a dominant offensive effort from Alex Talma.

Talma ended the game with 22 points and seven rebounds after being held to zero points on 0-for-4 in the first half. It was not just him in that struggled through the first 20 minutes though, as Biola was held to just 19 total points and faced a 30-point deficit at the break.

In addition to their strong shooting the Lancers used a big rebounding advantage (20-13) and a stingy defense which forced nine Biola turnovers to build its early lead.

In the second half though, Biola more than doubled their point output from that first half with 40 points poured in on a 47 percent shooting performance. They were outscoring the Lancers for most of that half until CBU started to head up from deep again.

The Eagles were cruising right along and had actually cut the lead back down to 23 until a 19-5 run by the home team to end the game got them right back up to their largest lead of the game, which was also the final resting place, 96-59.

The Lancers' didn't really have a weapon of choice on this night. They dominated the play in the paint with 42-26 advantage down low. They also lit it up from deep, going for their fourth-best number of three-pointers made (13).

Talma's 22 and Blake Shannon, Jr.'s 13 were the highest point numbers for the Eagles tonight. Biola also rectified the turnover issue over the final 20 minutes. The boys only coughed the ball up once in the second half.

The loss drops your Eagles to 10-14 (4-12 PacWest) and is a minor setback in what's been a fantastic stretch of the season for BU. CBU improves to 19-4 (12-3 PacWest) and is still just one game out of first place in the conference.

The Eagles have a chance to bounce back quickly from this one as they will host Dominican (5-17, 4-11 PWC) on Monday night at 7:30 p.m. That game is the first in a stretch of four home games in a row to end the season for BU.
