Late Run Sinks Eagles

Biola’s back-and-forth game with Point Loma turned in the Sea Lions’ favor with a late fourth quarter run.

SAN DIEGO --- The Biola Eagles suffered their first PacWest loss of the season on Wednesday night despite holding Point Loma Nazarene University to just 36 percent shooting in the game.

Tatum Brimley led the Eagles with 16 points and made a layup with 6:28 left in the game that brought Biola within one point at 42-41. But just four made three-pointers and some difficulties from the free throw line eventually resulted in a 60-53 loss for Biola after the Sea Lions had a good shooting stretch midway through the fourth quarter.

Biola and Point Loma end the night with the same conference record of 2-1. The Eagles are now 4-5 overall after dropping their second true road game of the season.

Wednesday's game was gritty from start to finish as both teams had difficulty establishing control of the game. The two sides combined for 41 turnovers in the game while just three scorers reached double-figures. But early on it seemed like that would work just fine for Biola because it caught the home team on a down shooting night.

The Eagles scrambled late in the first quarter to take a slim 17-16 lead going into the break on a last second three from Kayla Macedo. And in spite of a series of missed shots in the second quarter, Head Coach Alan Nakamura's group still had a 23-20 lead with 2:34 to go before halftime and then burst off of the halftime break to erase a small PLNU advantage and take a five-point lead on two Mikayla Greens free throws three minutes into the second half.

Unfortunately, the Eagles would only make one additional field goal the rest of the quarter and did not sink a three-pointer for the final 17-plus minutes of the game. Point Loma made five threes is contrast and turned the 42-41 game after Brimley's layup into a 51-40 game with three-straight baskets to take the driver's seat.

The Eagles' last push back made it a three-point game with under two minutes to go. But the Sea Lions kept the visiting team at arm's length by going 6-for-7 at the charity stripe down the stretch.

Biola looks to bounce back on Saturday when it travels to Irvine to take on Concordia. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
