Overtime And All That Jazz

A career scoring night from sophomore Jazz Benn and some late fortune help Biola scramble to an overtime victory over Concordia.

IRVINE, Calif.
--- The Biola Eagles came up with a big PacWest road win on Saturday, escaping Irvine with a 68-67 win over Concordia in overtime.

Jazz Benn had the highest scoring night of her career and showed some mamba mentality late in the game with 25 points. Tatum Brimley also came up big with 13 points and two big free throws in overtime to push Biola to 69 points in the 69-68 victory.

"Going into the game we knew we were going to be in for a tough, hard-fought game from start to finish. And that's exactly what we got," said Head Coach Alan Nakamura. "Concordia is a physical, well-coached team and we knew no lead was safe."

Despite a relatively comfortable first half for Biola, the game developed the intensity of a heavy cardiovascular workout in the fourth quarter and into overtime. BU jumped out to 7-0 and 18-3 leads in the first quarter as Benn scored 14 points in the first half. But Concordia quickly stopped the visitor's dominance in the key when the teams came out of halftime and CUI went on a 7-2 run to end the third quarter with at 51-46 lead.

Nakamura's group deserves a lot of credit for bouncing back in the third quarter and taking advantage of the openings Concordia gave them. Four different women scored field goals for Biola at the same time CUI scored just four points in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter, allowing the visitors to take a 56-55 lead.

Sara Dougan scored two of her six points on the night in that sequence while Brenna Khaw drained her second three-pointer of the game with 3:43 left to give her team the one-point advantage. Dougan also added nine rebounds in what was a very impressive first game of the season for the Lynden, Washington-native.

"We have excellent depth on our team; everyone is able to go in the game and make a positive difference," said Nakamura. "And the way the team sincerely pulls for each other makes our team chemistry click. That's what got us through to the end of this well-contested back-and-forth game."

For the final three minutes of regulation and through overtime, Biola's offense ran through Brimley and Benn. A Brimley free-throw tied the scored at 57-57 with under two minutes remaining. But it took three additional points from Benn, including a beautiful turnaround layup on an isolation play with 27 seconds left to force Concordia into desperation mode.

CUI's Michaela VanderKlugt had a chance to put her team up one with 12 seconds left. But she missed the first of her free throws and the game went into overtime without much more fan fare.

Benn immediately jumped ahead in overtime to give Biola the lead. The sophomore scored her team's first six points of the period and drained a jumper from two feet beyond the three-point arc to take a 66-63 lead. The trey pushed Benn's point total to 25, five points more than her previous career-high and 11 more than she had scored in a game this season.

After missing a few free throws earlier in the game, Brimley delivered when it mattered by going 2-for-2 at the charity stripe with 41 seconds left. Concordia would score two points in response to make the score 69-68 and then get the ball back with 12 seconds remaining. But CUI missed two short-range layups in the closing moments and dropped the conference game to Biola.

Nakamura's team in now back at .500 at 5-5 and is 3-1 in conference play. The Eagles will now have a full week to practice before Azusa Pacific travels to Chase Gym for the first Cornerstone Cup matchup of the season. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. but fans are encouraged to arrive early to accommodate the large-capacity crowd.
