Cougars Pounce In First Quarter

Azusa Pacific earns a double-figure victory over Biola in the first Cornerstone Cup game of the year.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was evident that both sides of Saturday's Cornerstone Cup Women's Basketball match knew the importance of the game. The Biola Eagles' faithful came out in force and gave Head Coach Alan Nakamura's team its biggest audience of the year while the Azusa Pacific Cougars more than made up for their smaller cheering section by playing smashmouth basketball.

Azusa Pacific jumped out to a 23-9 lead after the first quarter and used great defensive pressure and rebounding to earn a 81-55 victory. The Cougars improve to 8-3 and a perfect 5-0 in PacWest while the Eagles drop to 5-6, 3-2 PacWest.

The game started with Cougars' point guard Zoe March picking right up where she left off in her last game at Biola, scoring key baskets and being a key contributor for APU. March made all of her three-pointers in the opening 10 minutes and led her team with nine points as Azusa Pacific shot 10-of-25 from the floor.

Biola was only able to manage 10 shots total over the same timespan as the Cougars kept multiple possessions alive with nine offensive boards in the first quarter alone. APU would go on to pull down more offensive rebounds (23) than defensive rebounds (21) in the game, which ended up being a major factor that helped the Cougars keep control of play when their shooting went cold in the second quarter.

Senior Sara Dougan led the charge early in the second quarter as the Eagles shrunk their deficit to as small as seven points. The Lynden, Washington-native made Biola's first two field goals of the second quarter with a three-pointer and a layup that proved once again that is well on her way to full strength as she returns from injury.

Despite the fact that Biola outscored APU 12-to-11 in the second quarter, the Eagles were unable to create any more field goal attempts for Dougan or make back-to-back baskets after Dougan and Jazz Benn both made layups midway through the period. That allowed the Cougars to take a 13-point lead into halftime and come out aggressive in the second half to add to their advantage.

APU made eight three-pointers in the second half, led by Rachel Bozlee's five threes in 15 minutes, while Biola made got just nine points on shots from beyond the arc in the entire game. The Eagles' final three came during a brief but electric stretch created by freshman point guard Aysia Johnson, who immediately injected hustle and energy into the closing minutes of the game for her team.

Johnson scored five points and made two steals in the final four minutes of the contest and helped the Eagles shave nine points off of the Cougars' lead before the final buzzer.

The Eagles will have a break from PacWest action until the new year. Their next countable game is January 2 at home against Point Loma.
