Biola Gets The Bid

The Eagles are headed back to the NCCAA Championships, looking to defend.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Volleyball is on quite the roll. The Eagles defeated Ottawa (Ariz.) (25-17, 25-21, 25-13) on Tuesday evening to move the team's winning streak to five consecutive matches and 15 consecutive sets.

The win also handed BU the 2018 NCCAA West Region Championship and automatic bid to the NCCAA National Championship.

Karly Dantuma made her return to the lineup after sitting out the morning match and her presence was immediately felt. The senior right side had four kills in Biola's first six points and ended up with a team-high 11 kills despite only playing tiny tidbits of each set.

Biola had everything working for it in the nightcap as it made quick work of a talented Ottawa team. The Eagles had eight service aces and five blocks while holding their opponents to not a whole lot of either of those.

Vanessa Garcia brought her daily total of aces up to five after recording three in this win. She also had her third-consecutive match with more than 30 assists (32).

Just as it was in Biola's morning match against New Hope Christian, Biola only really ran into trouble in the second set. BU doubled up the Spirit at 12-6, but then had a late stretch where it allowed OUAZ to score six of seven points and pull all the way back within three.

That would be the closest it would get, though, as a kill from Vanessa Garcia and a handful of OUAZ errors allowed Biola to escape to go up 2-0. The Eagles then blitzed through the final frame to send everyone home before 8:15 p.m.

The win puts Biola at 23-6 overall and sets the team up well for its final two regular season matches of the year, coming up at home this weekend. The Eagles host Holy Names at 7:00 p.m. on Friday before finishing with Senior Day against Academy of Art at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
