Seniors Seal Strong Start To Weekend

Biola gets through Holy Names in straight sets to seal season sweep.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Three sets was all it would take on Friday night for Biola Volleyball to earn win number 24 in the 2018 season. The Eagles dismissed Holy Names in straight sets (25-12; 25-16; 25-14) to win their sixth-consecutive match, all by way of the sweep.

The night was the beginning of Senior Weekend for Biola, which will finish up with Saturday's regular season finale against Academy of Art. The seniors in the match seized the day and played a big role in the Eagles' ability to get out of the gym with a quick win.

Stephanie Jewett earned her first start of the season and turned it into a six kill, .214 hitting performance. She's compiled 16 kills in the team's first three matches of the week.

"Stephanie was doing awesome for us offensively tonight. She made some good selections tonight," said Head Coach Aaron Seltzer.

Joining Jewett with standout senior efforts were Karly Dantuma, Sierra Bauder and Brinley Beresford.

Dantuma only played in one set, the third, but my goodness was it a whale of a set for the lefty from Lakewood. Dantuma managed three kills on five swings, but more impressively she was in on four blocks in just two trips through the rotation.

Bauder was her typical stellar self with six kills on 11 swings to keep her astonishing offensive season going. She's leading the team with 287 kills and a .441 hitting percentage heading into the final match of the regular season. She will clinch the PacWest Conference single-season hitting percentage record with her performance tomorrow.

"What can you say about Sierra," said Seltzer. "She continues to have the most efficient season we've ever had in my time with this program. It's been incredible."

Finally, Beresford returned from injury for her first appearance of the week and chalked up 15 assists with no errors, three kills (hitting .750) and a pair of blocks.

The Eagles out-blocked the Hawks 11-2 on the night, and that was almost all to do with the standout effort of Bekah Roth. Roth had a season-high eight blocks and added seven kills on a .545 hitting percentage to have a huge impact on the result.

"Bekah had a really great night," said Seltzer. "She was fantastic blocking and offensively had one of her best nights."

The Eagles held Holy Names to a -.029 hitting percentage for the match. It's the second time in the Eagles' last three matches where its held a team to a negative percentage.

The win pushes BU to 24-6 (18-3 PacWest), while Holy Names heads into its final match of the year with a 3-24 (2-19 PacWest) record.

The Eagles host Academy of Art 1-28 (1-20 PacWest) at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Free Biola mini pennants will go out to the first few hundred fans in attendance. The Eagles' five seniors will be honored with a post-match ceremony.
