Eagles To Host Five Matches

Biola Volleyball has a busy week of postseason and regular season action ahead.

November 05, 2018

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Volleyball continues to win and do what it's needed to keep pace in the PacWest Conference standings headed into the final week of the season, but it may turn out to be just a little bit too little, too late due to Azusa Pacific's 3-0 Hawaiian road trip last week. Still, this final week of the regular season holds lots of potential for BU as they could add as many as four wins to their total with positive results.

LAST WEEK: W at Dominican, 3-0; W at Notre Dame de Namur, 3-0 (2-0 weekly record; 21-6 overall record; 17-3 PacWest, second place)

THIS WEEK: vs New Hope Christian College (NCCAA West Regional) - Tuesday Nov. 6 at 9:00 a.m.; NCCAA West Region Championship match - Tuesday Nov. 6 at 7:00 p.m.;  vs Holy Names (3-22, 2-17 PacWest) - Friday Nov. 9 at 7:00 p.m.; vs Academy of Art (1-27, 1-19 PacWest) - Saturday Nov. 10 at 1:00 p.m. (SENIOR DAY)

MULTIMEDIA: All three matches of the NCCAA West Region Championship on Tuesday will have a free live stream and live statistics available. The same goes for Biola's final two PacWest Conference home matches at the end of the week.

TICKETS: Biola home events are always free to Biola students, staff, faculty and alumni. Children 12 and under are also always free. General admission is $6 and discounted tickets for opposing school students, guests under 18 and seniors are $4. For away game ticket information, see the note below each preview. NOTE: Admission to the NCCAA West Regional will be free.

BIOLA (21-6) vs NEW HOPE CHRISTIAN COLLEGE (12-13): Tuesday Nov. 6 at 9:00 a.m. \\ Live Stats \\ Live Video \\ Promotion: Canned food drive benefiting Second Harvest Food Bank
Biola Volleyball hosts the NCCAA West Region championship tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 6 with matches at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. The Eagles and Deacons begin the action as the 1-seed vs. 4-seed matchup. It's the first-ever meeting between Biola and New Hope Christian College, which is located in Eugene, Ore. The Eagles and Deacons have zero common opponents this year and as such no base for comparison. Biola comes into the matchup with the far better overall record and also leads in all major statistical categories. Biola is ranked No. 1 in the NCCAA Power Rankings and top-10 poll. New Hope Christian is ranked 36th in the most recent power rankings.

NOTE - The winner of this match will play again at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday against the winner of Ottawa (Ariz.) vs. Saint Katherine. The winner of the 7:00 p.m. championship receives an automatic bid to the 2018 National Christian College Athletic Association championship in Branson, Mo.

BIOLA (21-6, 17-3 PacWest) vs HOLY NAMES (3-22, 2-17 PacWest): Friday Nov. 9 at 7:00 p.m. \\ Live Stats \\ Live Video \\ Last Meeting: Biola wins 3-0
Biola and Holy Names will meet for the second and final time this season on Friday evening in Chase Gym. The Eagles cruised to a 3-0 win against the Hawks up in the Bay Area and will look for a similar result in this, their last bird-related mascot battle of the 2018 regular season. Biola enters the matchup riding a streak of three-straight PacWest wins and 13 of the last 14. The Hawks were win number two in that stretch of 13 out of 14 as BU rode a three-set, 15-kill effort from senior Sierra Bauder to victory in NorCal. The Eagles are now 8-0 all-time vs. the Hawks. HNU comes into the week having lost 13 straight. They face Notre Dame de Namur on Tuesday before coming to SoCal for the weekend.

BIOLA (21-6, 17-3 PacWest) vs ACADEMY OF ART (1-27, 1-19 PacWest): Saturday Nov. 10 at 1:00 p.m. \\ Live Stats \\ Live Video \\ Last Meeting: Biola wins 3-0 \\ Promotion: Senior Day
Academy of Art finally picked up their first win of the season back on Halloween, when they earned a five-set win over Holy Names by beating the Hawks 15-10 in the fifth game. The Urban Knights have had a difficult season in terms of wins and losses, but they did get to celebrate relatively recently as they've had their senior middle blocker break a program record. Safua Elisaia, a graphic design major, recently broke the program's record for career blocks and positioned herself in the top-5 all-time in kills. She's recorded 637 career kills with over 130 this season. Biola beat Academy of Art in three sets in a match up North early in the conference season. Sierra Bauder was also the Eagles' leading hitter in that matchup, with 12. Biola is 2-0 all-time against the Knights, with both matchups coming in the last two seasons.

ABOUT LAST WEEK: Last week was a marvelous week for Biola, with the Eagles going 2-0, not dropping a single game and also recording the largest single-set win (25-7) in program history. However, it was also bittersweet as the team scoreboard watched and saw rival Azusa Pacific (narrowly escape) and go 3-0 on its Hawaiian road trip. The Cougars were forced to five sets with both Hawaii Pacific and Chaminade, but dug deep and won both matches to keep Biola at one match back in the standings headed into the final week of play. Both schools have a lighter final week, with BU's opponents having a combined conference record of 3-36 and APU's opponent's having a combined conference mark of 13-26. Biola beat Dominican and Notre Dame de Namur in straight sets last week, and that is who comes to Azusa to face the Cougars later on this week.

FOUR-PEAT: If all goes right, Biola Volleyball has a chance to win four matches this week. Four-match weeks are rare. Four wins in a week is even more rare. The last time Biola Volleyball won four matches in one week (during the run of the regular season) was the beginning of the 2015 season at the Biola-Red Lion Anaheim Summer Slam tournament. The Eagles beat No. 14 College of Idaho, No. 5 Rocky Mountain, No. 13 Davenport and Great Falls to begin the season 4-0 and kick-off a streak of 15-consecutive victories to start the year. BU would end up 30-4 that season, ending the year with a five-set loss (16-14) in the NAIA Quarterfinals to eventual national champion, Columbia.

RANKED! (AGAIN): With its tremendous overall record of 21-6 and the recent stretch of 13 wins in 14 matches, Biola Volleyball earned a spot in the American Volleyball Coaches Association's NCAA Division II Coaches' Poll. The Eagles and the Azusa Pacific Cougars are the only PacWest teams represented in the poll. Both teams are just outside of the top-25, but they are "receiving votes". Volleyball is the first program at Biola to be represented in an officially recognized NCAA Division II national poll in season. Visit the Week 11 AVCA Poll. Former PacWest member Dixie State moved into the poll this week, too, also receiving votes.

SENIOR SEND-OFF: Biola Volleyball will say good-bye (kind of) to five treasured seniors on Saturday, following the team's final home match of the season. Karly Dantuma, Brinley Beresford, Sierra Bauder, Stephanie Jewett and Hannah Van Warmerdam will all be celebrated after the Eagles' 1:00 p.m. match with Academy of Art.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING: Sierra Bauder is well on her way to setting a new PacWest Conference record for hitting percentage. The senior is settling in at .455 this season, which is well over the current PacWest record of .417. She also leads all of NCAA Division II in that category. However, since Biola is yet to be a full member of NCAA Division II she won't show up in the official stat listing. If she can maintain that spot, she'd become the second Biola student-athlete to finish first in the NCAA Division II stat category, but the first to do so outright. Baseball's Daniel Jang tied with two others to lead the nation in saves (14) in 2018. He went on to earn All-American honors from the coaches association, making him the institution's first-ever NCAA Division II All-American. Bauder is in the mix for PacWest Player of the Year in volleyball. Look for her to go off this week to improve that standing even more.

ROAD TO 1,000 (AND THEN SOME): Senior opposite hitter Karly Dantuma has now become the 15th Biola player to pass the 1,000 kill plateau and sits at 1,168 for her career. Dantuma also has a chance to eclipse 300 career blocks (288). If she does reach 300, she'd be just the fourth player in Biola history to have 1,000+ kills and 300+ blocks (Becky Miller, Amy Weststeyn, Michelle Warkentin).

SHOOTING FOR 30: Head Coach Aaron Seltzer is in his 17th season at the helm of the BU Volleyball squad. He's the winningest coach in program history with an all-time mark of 453-139 (.765). He's never experienced a losing season during his tenure at Biola (or even come close, with his "worst" mark being 19-11). His teams have won at least 26 matches every year since 2010. The Eagles could be right around that number at the end of this week, with the chance to be 25-6 (.806). The Eagles would then be shooting to get to 30 with a strong showing at the NCCAA National Tournament. If achieved it'd be seventh time a Seltzer-coached squad got to 30 and the first time since the 30-4 team in 2015.

NEXT WEEK: Nothing. The next competition for Biola Volleyball will be at the NCCAA National Championships Nov. 29 - Dec. 1.
