Eagles Fly High In Bird Win

Biola beats Southwestern Christian to improve to 2-0 in pool play.

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. --- Match two for Biola Volleyball at the National Christian College Athletic Association National Championship tournament went very similar to match one. The No. 1-seeded Biola Eagles took down the No. 5-seed Southwestern Christian Eagles in straight sets (25-15, 25-17, 25-13) to clinch a spot in the semifinals.

Biola held SCU to exactly .000 hitting (25 kills, 25 errors) and held Southwest Christian's top attacker to just three kills on a -.190 percentage to enable them to cruise through the match.

"The girls played great tonight. It was a really good team effort," said Head Coach Aaron Seltzer.

The Eagles got production from all around in another total team effort. BU had 43 kills on a .340 clip, led by Sabrina Winslow's 12 kills (.310) and sophomore Savannah Hilde's 10 kills on a .500 clip. It's the second time this season that Hilde's eclipsed the 10-kill plateau.

Set three, which was the Eagles' biggest win of the day, was actually their worst game offensively, but Biola had the fortune of SCU having their worst offensive set too. BU's opponents had just seven kills to go along with 10 errors to hit negative in the set.

After Winslow and Hilde came seniors Sierra Bauder and Brinley Beresford. Beresford was able to do almost anything she wanted with the ball, working her way to seven kills on 10 swings. She also led the team with 18 assists as she's off to a hot start to her final collegiate tournament. Bauder had nine kills while hitting .667 and co-leading the team with three blocks.

Biola's block was dangerous in this match, ending up out-blocking the other Eagles 7-1. Karly Dantuma co-led the effort with three of her own. With the blocks, Dantuma hit 300 career stops to become just the fourth player in program history with 1,000 kills and 300 blocks.

"Karly has been a special player in this program for four years," said Seltzer. "So happy for the way her career has turned out and the kind of young lady she is. We're definitely going to miss her after this year."

The Eagles out-dug the opposition 60-48 with three players getting double-digits. Libero Sami Hover led the effort as usual with 16 digs. Kaitlin O'Brien was next with 14 and finally Winslow had a double-double by bringing up 12 digs.

The win pushes Biola to 27-6 overall and 2-0 at this tournament. The Eagles conclude pool play Friday morning at 8:00 a.m. PT vs. Campbellsville. If the Eagles win that they would play in the semifinals at 2:30 p.m. PT.
