Game Recap: Volleyball |

Three Set Thriller

Biola battles through two close sets then finishes sweep in blowout.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. --- One thing was not like the others on Friday night as Biola Volleyball took on the Dominican Penguins. That one thing was the third set. The two sides played very close games in the first two sets, even going to extra points in the second. Then, Biola came out refocused and slammed the door shut with a 25-7 win in the third set to earn it's 20th win of the 2018 season.

The Eagles took set one 25-22 and set two 26-24 before recording its biggest set win since August 2016 in the match finale.

Biola took early leads in all three sets, holding as much as a nine-point lead in the first and as big as an eight-point lead in the second set, but each of those first two times the pesky Penguins found a way to force the issue.

Dominican won seven of eight points to pull back into it in the middle of the second set, and then it managed to fend off four Biola set points to tie the game at 24-24 and make things very interesting in the middle game.

However, a pair of unforced attack errors helped Biola overcome the second-set comeback and win 26-24 to set up the runaway third game.

That second game was the second time DUC managed a big, late run. The host team five set points in the first game, turing a 24-17 BU lead into a 24-22 BU lead, before ultimately a Sabrina Winslow kill ended the game.

In the third and final set, Biola managed 15 kills on just 26 swings and made zero attack errors to hit a match-high .577. On the flip side, Dominican had just six kills to go with eight errors in a disappointing final frame for the flightless fowl.

Sierra Bauder was a major reason for the Eagles' ability to cruise through the third set. The senior middle blocker had six kills in the last set. She would end with 11 kills overall, which was second-best on the team.

Christina DenBoer had a handful in the final frame to help her to her team-best total of 14 for the night. The sophomore had her third-straight double-double by adding 13 digs, which was second only to Sami Hover's 16.

Biola finished one block shy of double-digits, led by four a piece from Bauder and Bekah Roth and a trio from Winslow.

The win brings Biola to 20-6 overall and 16-3 in PacWest Conference competition. It's a new single-season high for conference victories during Biola's time in the PacWest.

The Eagles will look to continue their good run of play as they face Notre Dame de Namur (8-18, 7-11 PacWest) at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday in Belmont. The Argos also played at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, earning a 3-0 win over Concordia Irvine.
