Tough Fourth Slows Eagles

Biola worked into a position to clip Tarleton State in the second, but the TexAnns pulled away in the fourth.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles found their winning flow in the third quarter of Thursday's game against Tarleton State, creating a 12-point swing in the score in the first period of the second half to put a scare into the TexAnns.

Unfortunately, several Tarleton State field goals along with a few turnovers from Biola resulted in an 11-point run for the TexAnns in the fourth quarter that lasted about six minutes and the Eagles ended up on the short end of the game, 62-50.

The Eagles' strong third quarter helped them overcome a slow start on offense and 14 total points in the first half. Brenna Khaw led the first-half scoring with six points on two threes but the other Eagles on the floor would miss all 10 of their attempts from beyond the arc over the first 20 minutes.

In the meantime, defending Lone Star Conference Player of the Week Kaylee Allen took over for the 10-minute duration of the second quarter to push Tarleton State's lead to 16 at the break. Allen scored all 12 of her team's points in the second quarter on 5-of-6 shooting but made just one shot during the second half as Biola turned things around in a big way.

Coming out of the halftime break, the tandem of Jazz Benn and Danita Estorga injected life into the Eagles' offensive with back-to-back-to-back three-pointers in the first two-plus minutes of the half. Estorga's three at the 7:56 mark brought the deficit back to single-digits before her teammates chipped in to bring the score all the way within two points during the latter portion of the quarter.

The Eagles shot 67 percent from the field in the third quarter, including big layups from Jessica Shill and Mikayla Greens and a clutch three-pointer from Kayla Macedo that immediately responded to a three from Kaylee Allen on the previous play and kept the game close with 11 minutes left in the contest.

Benn and Estorga combined for 15 of Biola's 24 points in the third quarter and were the Eagles only two double-figure scorers with 11 and 14 points, respectively. Benn also pulled down eight boards while Estorga collected two blocks and three steals.

The Eagles will return to Chase Gym for their second home game on Saturday when La Sierra comes to La Mirada. Tip-off for the game against the Golden Eagles is scheduled for 7 p.m.
