Eagles Set New Shooting Record

Biola Women’s Basketball set a new program record for made three-pointers with 17 in its 86-54 win over La Sierra.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Women's Basketball shot the lights out on Saturday to earn its first win of the season in grand fashion.

The Eagles eclipsed Biola's previous record for made three-pointers in the game with 17 in their 86-54 win over La Sierra and saw nine individual Eagles sink a bucket from deep in the contest. Biola's previous record was 16 three-pointers over another Eagle-team, Embry Riddle (Ariz.), on Nov. 23, 2016.

"It's exciting to see the players enjoy a payoff from all their dedication and hard work," said Head Coach Alan Nakamura. "It's great to see us applying what we've been working on; playing with a lot of energy and compete for the full 40 minutes and beyond when necessary."

Jazz Benn led the Eagles in the winning effort with a game-high 13 points, five assists and 10 rebounds to record her first double-double of the year. Brenna Khaw followed just behind with 12 points on four three-pointers she drained in the second half and every Eagle who saw time of the floor on Saturday scored in the 32-point win.

Biola sprinted out of the gates in the first quarter to build a sizeable lead on La Sierra and kept its lead in double-figures for the final three quarters of the contest. Benn, Tatum Brimley and Mikayla Greens each knocked down three pointers in the first two minutes of the game to kickstart a 25-point quarter for the Eagles, while Jelissa Puckett took care of all Biola's scoring down the stretch with seven points in three minutes to secure a 10-point lead for her team.

The Eagles then went 4-for-6 from the field to begin the second quarter and built a 20-point lead that would go unanswered by La Sierra. Danita Estorga and Jessica Shill were big players early in the second and third quarters for Biola to help establish the winning momentum. Estorga's three to open the second quarter and back-to-back layups from Shill to give Biola a 35-15 lead propelled the tandem of forward to at least seven points and five rebounds each on the night.

"We had some standout performances on the court from Mikayla and Jess inside early in the game and Jazz inside and out," said Nakamura. "Brenna also played her game well tonight. But really we moved the ball like a team and found the best shots."

Like Benn, Greens and Khaw, Tatum Brimley also finished in double figures for the first time this season with 11 points. She also recorded three steals as Biola picked the visitors' pockets 18 times during the game.

The Eagles concluded the week with a 1-1 record at home while La Sierra drops to 2-6. Biola will squeeze in a few days of practice before traveling to Azusa for two games over Thanksgiving weekend. The Eagles will take on Northeastern State on Friday at 1:00 p.m.
