Greens Has Career Night

Junior forward Mikayla Greens went off for a career-high 24 points and rebounds before Biola lost late to Cal State Dominguez Hills.

CARSON, Calif. --- Junior forward Mikayla Greens played another one of those basketball games where her hard work on Saturday night. But things went to a new level against Cal State Dominguez Hills as Greens exploded for 24 points and 12 rebounds in the road contest to set a new career high for points while coming within one board of her best rebound mark.

Greens massive double-double helped Biola fight through a second-half scoring drought that saw the Eagles lose a medium sixed lead over the Toros. Unfortunately, her 18 second-half points provided the majority of Biola's points and fell short of preventing Cal State Dominguez Hills from going onto win, 74-65.

The Eagles showed a lot of grit in the first half to overcome a nine-point deficit in the second quarter to take a six-point lead into break. Biola outscored the home team 19-7 in the second quarter and scored 17 of the final 19 points in the period to turn the tables on the Toros.

Jazz Benn paced that 17-point effort with five points as five Eagles chipped in points during the run. In fact, free throw shooting was the only area on the offensive side of the floor where the Eagles could have seen notable improvement in the first half. Head Coach Alan Nakamura's team shot 57 percent from the field and 56 percent from beyond the arc, but were just 5-for-12 from the charity stripe over the first 20 minutes.

Unfortunately for Biola, Heaven Holmes and Cal State Dominguez Hills came up with a great run of their own to neutralize the Eagles' advantage. After a Greens' three-point play made it 43-34 in favor of Biola about three minutes into the half, Holmes scored 13 unanswered points as Dominguez Hills went on a 20-to-4 to build a nine-point lead of their own with a minute left in the third quarter.

A few layups early in the fourth quarter brought Biola within five points, but five Toros' field goals in the paint kept the Eagles at arms' length and cinched the nine-point victory for Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Despite that, Biola benefitted from good production from its bench for the second night in a row as junior point guard Jelissa Puckett joined Greens in double-figure scoring with 11 while Danita Estorga pulled in eight rebounds. Nakamura's bench provided 22 points in total, giving the Eagles' subs an average of 28.5 ppg through two contests.

The Eagles will hope to turn things around in their next game, when they play their home opener on Nov. 15 against Tarleton State. Tip-off in Chase Gym is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
