Goals Finally Flood In

Biola’s starting forwards combined for three first-half goals in a commanding 3-0 win over Holy Names.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles earned a shutout victory for the first time in eight matches on Thursday. But that storyline took a back seat to the excellent performance Biola's starting forward turned in during the 10-minute span between the 15th and 25th minute in the first half.

Biola's Annmarie Alvarez, Madi deMetropolis and Sarah Jeffries were responsible for three-goals during that brief stretch in the first half as the Eagles went onto a 3-0 victory over Holy Names. Biola would take a total of 26 shots in the match, 13 in each half, to command play and earn its first PacWest win since Oct. 13

The win lifts Biola's PacWest record to 5-3-2 and keeps the Eagles' chances alive to qualify for NCCAA postseason play with the required-top three finish. In order to qualify, the Eagles would need to beat Dominican while three other PacWest results on Saturday go in Biola's favor.

Junior forward Annmarie Alvarez scored the first and third of Biola's goals, burying passes from deMetropolis and Jeffries to reward each of her fellow forwards with assists. Alvarez had also scored two goals against Holy Names last season to give her four at that point in the 2017 season. But her two scores today gave Alvarez a new career-high of six goals, tying her with Jeffries for the team lead this season.

With both of Alvarez goals coming from scrums in the penalty area, deMetropolis' combination with Jeffries stood out as the cleanest goal of the match. As the clock elapsed toward the 18-minute mark, Jeffries launched an absolute rocket at the top shelf that the Holy Names keeper could do nothing with. After Jeffries' shot ricocheted off the crossbar, it bounced right toward deMetropolis' space for her to finish the closest thing to an alleyoop Biola has seen on the soccer pitch in 2018.

Although Jeffries' mini-streak of two-straight matches with goals was broken on Thursday, the Auburn, California native has still recorded at least two points in three-straight matches and now leads the Eagles in all offensive categories: goals, shots, shots-on-goal and assists with five.

Following the home team's scoring flurry, the Eagles took the opportunity to mix the rest of their roster into the match and save players' legs headed into Saturday's match. Freshman Lindsay Gerle did a great job in 54 minutes at center-back and played the entire second half in Devin Gooch's stead. Brynne Anderson saw playing time in her first match since Sept. 8 and Rachel Doncel concluded the first half at outside back for the Eagles in the first minutes of her Biola career.

The only thing that ended up being up for debate in the second half was whether Alvarez would get on the end of another ball to accomplish Biola's first hat trick since 2015. But the Hawks' defense rallied to stop all five of Biola's second-half shots-on-goal and prevent the Eagles from getting any more open looks.

Alyssa Joel played the second half in goal and made the only save that was asked of her after Viviana Poli took care of the first half.

Now the Eagles will have a day to prepare for their match on Saturday with Dominican. Kickoff of Biola's final regular season match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
