Eagles Wrap-up 2018 Season

Biola played a strong defensive battle for 99-plus minutes and came up with an equalizing goal before losing in overtime.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles concluded their 2018 season on Saturday with a match against the Dominican Penguins that was marked by their characteristic hard work and strengths on the pitch.

The Biola defense limited the Penguins to just eight shots in the match while midfielders like Katelyn Penner and Hali Oakes moved with pace around the entire field all match long to facilitate Biola's maintenance of possession and passes forward. Meanwhile, Sarah Jeffries was locked in from distance and forced Dominican keeper to bring her best to play on Saturday in order to save several rockets from Jeffries that were careening toward the top shelf.

Unfortunately, Saturday would not be the Eagles' night because Dominican was able to sneak in a goal in the last second of the first overtime on a rushed set piece that was headed into goal. Biola ends the season with a winning record in conference at 5-4-2 and a .500 overall record at 7-7-4.

The loss comes despite Biola's strong attack throughout the match, to the tune of matching or outshooting the Penguins' shot total in all three periods. Jeffries was the leading lady responsible for the Eagles' pressure on the Dominican goal and took just two shots fewer than the entire visiting team all by herself Saturday.

Jeffries finished the 2018 season with an impressive 29 shots-on-goal, accounting for 58 percent of her total shots.

A few good saves by Dominican keeper Alyssa Ramos and the occasional break-up of Biola's forward passes by Ramos' backline kept the Penguins in the match in the first half and caused the match to go into halftime scoreless. But the scoring would open up in the second half as both sides finally broke through when crashing on the opposing penalty area.

The Penguins took the initial lead just as the clock turned to the 63rd minute and Tianna Brown stepped toward the ball as it rolled away from the penalty area. Brown kicked an impressive ball toward top shelf that flew over the reach of the leaping Viviana Poli to salvage Dominican's crash into the penalty area on a dangerous cross.

But the Eagles' grit would bring them the equalizing goal just 13 minutes later when Paula-Marie Labate scored her third goal on Colie Martin's third assist of the season. The defender from Carlsbad set up the goal by lofting the ball from the area to the left of the center-circle toward the six-yard area, where Labate fought for the ball in the air and pounded the ball inside the left post when it fell back toward the turf.
Biola's best chance to win the match came in the last 25 seconds of regulation. Labate created a one-v-one chance in the box that was blocked by a Penguin defender, followed by another long line-drive from Jeffries that was destined for the top-right corner had Ramos not left her feet to push the ball over the crossbar.

The Eagles are in a great position headed into the 2019 season, with everyone on this year's roster eligible to return and a massive senior class that has racked up a ton of experience and recognitions over their first three years. Next season will also be the Eagles' first chance to qualify for NCAA postseason and the PacWest had better be ready for a Biola team that is deadest on a conference championship.
