Ready For Final Road Trip

Biola Volleyball has its last road matches of the season this week in NorCal.

October 31, 2018

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Volleyball got through the toughest week of its schedule with a .500 record. The Eagles took on the two other top teams in the conference and had a narrow road loss and dominant home win to cement its place as a top-2 team in the PacWest. Now, it's time for the final road trip of the season, before finishing the regular season at home next week.

LAST WEEK: L vs Azusa Pacific, 3-1; W vs Point Loma, 3-0 (1-1 weekly record; 19-6 overall record; 15-3 PacWest, second place)

THIS WEEK: at Dominican (7-15, 5-12 PacWest) - Friday Nov. 2 at 7:00 p.m.; at Notre Dame de Namur (7-18, 6-11 PacWest) - Saturday Nov. 3 at 3:00 p.m.

MULTIMEDIA: Both matches will be live streamed and have live statistics available. Dominican's live stream is $8.00 per match. Notre Dame de Namur's live stream also has a cost, although that price is not listed at this time. See the links below to access those.

TICKETS: Biola home events are always free to Biola students, staff, faculty and alumni. Children 12 and under are also always free. General admission is $6 and discounted tickets for opposing school students, guests under 18 and seniors are $4. For away game ticket information, see the note below each preview.

BIOLA (19-6, 15-3) at DOMINICAN (7-15, 5-12): Friday Nov. 2 at 7:00 p.m. \\ Live Stats \\ Live Video ($) \\ Previous Meeting: Biola wins 3-2
The Dominican Penguins came as close as any team has to finishing off Biola's winning streak vs. teams with bird mascots. The Penguins won sets two and four against Biola here in Chase Gym to make the Eagles play an uncomfortable fifth game earlier this year. BU ended up getting the win in set five, 15-12, but the Penguins proved they could compete against the best the PacWest has to offer. DUC has also taken sets off top teams Hawaii Hilo, Chaminade and Point Loma in losing efforts. So do not expect this to be an easy match for Head Coach Aaron Seltzer's team. Especially following an entire week without competition. Biola should look to win big in the first set to establish an early advantage and avoid having to play back on their heels. The Eagles were led by 17 kills from Karly Dantuma in their last win over Dominican and are now 2-0 all-time against the Penguins.

BIOLA (19-6, 15-3) vs. NOTRE DAME DE NAMUR (7-18, 6-11): Saturday Nov. 3 at 3:00 p.m. \\ Live Stats \\ Live Video \\ Previous Meeting: Biola wins 3-0
Biola is now 12-0 all-time against Notre Dame de Namur following a convincing 3-0 home win over the Argonauts just two weeks ago. The Eagles leaned on their servers and blockers in that matchup, landing 10 aces to NDNU's 1 and recording six blocks to the Argos' three. Vanessa Garcia was the standout player in the match, recording a team-high four service aces, leading the Eagles with 25 assists and even adding six digs and a kill. In the weeks since, Garcia has moved to the top spot on the team with 475 assists this season. She and Brinley Beresford were spot on against NDNU, making zero setting errors and helping the Eagles hit .351 as a team in one of BU's 10 3-0 victories this season.

TICKETS - NDNU does not list its ticketing information.

ABOUT LAST WEEK: Last week is a week of mixed feelings for Biola Volleyball. The Eagles suffered a close road loss to rivals (and new first-place team Azusa Pacific), but then they bounced back in a big way with a dominant sweep over the Point Loma Sea Lions. In the sweep of the Sea Lions, the Eagles recorded their fifth-highest team hitting percentage in program history and saw two players, Sierra Bauder and Karly Dantuma, match or bettered the previous program record for single-match hitting percentage by hitting over .800. It was a monumental victory for Biola because it created a bit of distance behind it in the Sea Lions and kept it right on the heels of Azusa Pacific in the chase for first-place. The loss to APU was the first loss for BU since Sept. 20. Now, the Eagles will look to start a new five-match winning streak to win out the remainder of the regular season to have its best shot at winning its first PacWest Championship.

NICE TIMES IN NORCAL: Since joining the PacWest, Biola Volleyball has made two NorCal trips prior to this week. The Eagles have a 5-0 record with 15 set wins and just 1 set loss over the course of those two trips. Biola will look to stretch that to 7-0 this week in an effort to keep pace in the conference standings and remain unbeaten against this week's opponents.

RANKED! (AGAIN): With its tremendous overall record of 19-6 and the recent stretch of 10 consecutive wins, Biola Volleyball earned a spot in the American Volleyball Coaches Association's NCAA Division II Coaches' Poll. The Eagles and the Azusa Pacific Cougars are the only PacWest teams represented in the poll. Both teams are just outside of the top-25, but they are "receiving votes". Volleyball is the first program at Biola to be represented in an officially recognized NCAA Division II national poll in season. Visit the Week 10 AVCA Poll. The Eagles are 4-2 this season in matches against PacWest teams that have been either ranked or receiving votes (APU, PLNU, Chaminade).

HUNTING FOR A RECORD: Sierra Bauder is in a dead heat with Julianne Miller of Azusa Pacific for the PacWest Conference record for single-season hitting percentage. Bauder has a season tally of .451, while Miller is hitting .413. The current conference record is .417. Barring any substantial breakdown, both players could end the season hitting higher than that, it's just a matter of who will end up on top. Head-to-head the two teams split the competitions this season. But Bauder was considerably better in both matchups, ending up with 25 kills and a .444 clip against APU, while Miller had just 16 kills and .183 clip against Biola.

ROAD TO 1,000 (AND THEN SOME): Senior opposite hitter Karly Dantuma has now become the 15th Biola player to pass the 1,000 kill plateau and sits at 1,148 for her career. Dantuma also has a chance to eclipse 300 career blocks (285). If she does reach 300, she'd be just the fourth player in Biola history to have 1,000+ kills and 300+ blocks (Becky Miller, Amy Weststeyn, Michelle Warkentin).

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BRINLEY: Before the Eagles take-off to NorCal for this week's festivities they'll have a chance to celebrate Brinley Beresford's b-day on Halloween. Happy birthday to the Eagles' senior setter!

SELTZER'S SEVENTEENTH: Seltzer is in his 17th season at the helm of the BU Volleyball squad. He's the winningest coach in program history with an all-time mark of 451-139 (.764). He's never experienced a losing season during his tenure at Biola (or even come close, with his "worst" mark being 19-11). His teams have won at least 26 matches every year since 2010.

NEXT WEEK: vs New Hope Christian College (11/6 at 9:00 a.m. - NCCAA Regional); vs Holy Names (11/9 at 7:00 p.m.); vs Academy of Art (11/10 at 1:00 p.m. - Senior Day)
