Point Loma Takes Part Two

Point Loma’s two second-half goals overcame Sarah Jeffries' second goal in as many matches to defeat Biola 3-1.

SAN DIEGO --- Biola traveled to San Diego on Monday for the final road match of its PacWest schedule and took on the conference regular season champions in Point Loma.

The Eagles would score their first goal of the game, and only the fourth allowed by the Sea Lions all season, in the 80th minute but that was not enough to prevent Point Loma from winning its ninth PacWest match of the year by a score of 3-1.

The Eagles can still finish the season with 20 conference points even though their record moves to 4-3-2 in PacWest. The Sea Lions remain unbeaten in their last 15 matches at 14-1-1, 9-0-1 PacWest and defeat Biola for the second time this season.

For the first 42 minutes of the match, Biola looked a likely candidate to hand Point Loma its first conference loss and had gone up 1-0 for an instant before a flag on the right sideline called the goal back for offsides.

After a foul was committed on Katelyn Penner near the centerline, junior Colie Martin lofted a set piece toward goal that was headed on toward the far-right corner of the six-yard area. After making a run to her left and chesting the ball down, Yang took a touch and looped the ball past keeper Emma Hinson with the outside of her foot. But the AR had his flag up by the time Yang embraced her teammates and Point Loma caught the break they needed to eventually take the victory.

The Sea Lions would open up the scoring just before halftime on a goal from freshman Taylor Simpkins and really put the pressure on Biola in the 75th minute when Ashlee Watkins headed in a goal on a set piece.

But as she has done so reliably this season, Sarah Jeffries was able to put a strong kick on a ball in the 80th minute and scored her second goal in as many matches to bring Biola within one score with 10 minutes to play. Jeffries goal was the second in as many matches for the forward and makes her the Eagles' leading candidate for All-PacWest honors now that she has a total of six to lead the team.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, the additional goal that came in the final 10 minutes was in the Sea Lions' favor and the match would end with a 3-1 score. Freshman keeper Viviana Poli ended the afternoon with six saves, while Jeffries took both shots-on-goal for the Eagles to give her a season total of 25.

The Eagles will play their final two regular-season conference matches at home. First up is an evening match with Holy Names scheduled to kickoff at 7 p.m.
