New Year, Repeat Result

Azusa Pacific and Biola tied in a 1-1 match for the second year in a row after neither team could find a scoring chance in overtime.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles and Azusa Pacific Cougars split 10 Cornerstone Cup points on Saturday night after neither side could find an additional goal in 20 minutes of overtime.

After winning the men's match earlier on Saturday, APU has a 20-10 lead in the Cornerstone Cup. But that will not stand for the long because 20 additional Cup points will be on the line on Nov. 2 during the PacWest Cross Country Championship in Fresno, California.

The Eagles started the match in full-throttle forward on attack and came within a few inches of a goal on multiple occasions. Annmarie Alvarez hit the crossbar with a line drive from on top of the penalty area in the second minute only for Hali Oakes to hit the right post on a bending ball in the 17th minute.

Alvarez followed with another strong shot that just went high off the rebound from Oakes' shot. But Biola's early efforts would not come to fruition until Sarah Jeffries unleashed a beautiful strike in the 30th minute.

Taking the ball into space down the left sideline, Colie Martin put the ball on Jeffries' feet on the left side on the penalty area and allowed the Auburn, California native to take about three strides to her right before turning her body toward goal and launching the ball over a leaping Tatum French and into the back of the net to give Biola the early lead.

The Eagles would hold onto their lead pretty comfortably for the final 15 minutes of the first half. But Azusa Pacific was very aggressive at the start of the second half and was rewarded with an equalizing goal just 10 minutes into the half. Randi Macadangdang scored against Biola for the second time in as many years when a pass across the penalty area found her for an open shot in the 55th minute.

The match's next shot on goal wouldn't come until 30 minutes later, when Jeffries gave French another test followed by another chance from Devin Gooch in the 87th minute. With condensation and cooler temperatures beginning to settle on the pitch it became very difficult for the teams to carve through their opponent's defense as the slick field began to play a bit faster and flatter.

Azusa Pacific took four shots on goal during the first overtime period in an attempt to steal three points. But they were denied by Viviana Poli while the freshman racked up a total of eight saves.

Jeffries was able to get off a last-ditch effort just 26 seconds before the match ended. But the APU defense got in front of the shot to block it and the two teams finished in a 1-1 draw for the second year in a row.

Biola turns around very quickly for its next match, traveling to San Diego to face Point Loma at 1 p.m.
