FPU’s Early Lead Stands

Biola worked very hard for 83 minutes while it tried to find an equalizing goal, but Fresno Pacific held on to a 1-0 shutout.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Coming to Al Barbour Field for the first time since 2011, the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds brought a physical, back-and-forth match to the Biola Eagles on Saturday and eventually prevailed 1-0 on an early goal.

Tori De Leon took the first shot of the match for either side in the eighth minute and tucked the ball inside the left post after Mackenzie Reynolds pushed the ball into open space in the penalty area. It would be the first of 19 shots for the Sunbirds in the match, but the Eagles defense did an excellent job of prohibiting Fresno Pacific from getting another good chance in the penalty area as Biola pursued an equalizer.

Unfortunately Head Coach Erin Brunelle's group could only produce three shots in the match as the visiting Sunbirds repeatedly cut off the Eagles' attempts at forward passes and made it extremely difficult to dribble the ball into the attacking third of the field. Fresno Pacific's pressure and physicality resulted in 15 fouls in the match but it also forced Biola forwards like Sarah Jeffries and Annmarie Alvarez to fight for forward progress beyond the center line.

The Sunbirds were lucky that Jeffries did not burn them on Saturday with one of her powerful runs down the left sideline during the second half since she beat the defender marking her multiple times. The Auburn, California native produced the only shot on goal of the match for Biola, giving her at least one shot on target in seven of Biola's last eight contests.

Alyssa Joel was also solid between the pipes for the Eagles, making eight saves after the early goal as she handled many line drives from outside the penalty area. She now has a total of 33 saves on the year and kept her goals against average below one at 0.88.

Biola remains tied with the Hawaii Hilo Vulcans in the PacWest standings after Hawaii Pacific beat UH Hilo 1-0 on Saturday. The Vulcans and Eagles are tied for third place after Azusa Pacific defeated Academy of Art to take sole possession of second place.

The Cougars come to Al Barbour Field on Saturday for a Cornerstone Cup doubleheader with both men's and women's soccer teams. The women's match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
