Eagles Stay Perfect Vs. Argos

Biola Volleyball improved to 12-0 all-time against NDNU with a 3-0 win.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- There was no sign of jet lag with this Biola Volleyball team as they faced Notre Dame de Namur on Friday evening, back at Chase Gymnasium for the first time since their whirlwind Hawaii trip.

The Eagles took care of business quickly and relatively cleanly to the tune of a 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-14) win. It was the Eagles' ninth win in a row and for the moment puts them in sole possession of first-place in the conference by a half-game.

"Our usual suspects showed up and we played consistent which was good," said Head Coach Aaron Seltzer. "I was super proud of our defense. We defended very well and Vanessa set the ball very intelligently."

The Eagles trailed for a spell early in the first game, but two separate four-point runs allowed BU to overcome some early difficulties and take a 12-9 lead. Biola never trailed in the game from that point on, despite NDNU doing all that it could to keep it close. It was a third four-point stretch (points 18, 19, 20 and 21) that cemented the result for Biola as they extended to 21-16 advantage.

Sierra Bauder and Hannah Van Warmerdam were both a part of those last two four-point runs as the seniors helped lift the Eagles to the 1-0 advantage in the match.

"Hannah did a very good job at times, and then as the match went along they all did a good job at limiting errors," said Seltzer.

The Eagles had five attack errors and three service errors in the first game, but cut that down considerably as the match rolled along, with just four attack errors in set two and just two in a dominant third-set win. Serving was a key reason Biola was able to come out in the third and cruise to a considerable win. The Eagles had five of their 10 service aces in the third, including a stretch of three in a row from Vanessa Garcia that got BU its 15th, 16th and 17th points.

Biola's 10 aces is the second-most they've had in a match this season. It's the fourth time this year they've reached double-digits in that category.

The defense did well at avoiding giving up aces to NDNU, holding the Argos to just one ace all night long. It's the fourth time this year Biola's had one or fewer receiving errors. The +9 differential on the aces ties the season-best, when BU had 11 and Fresno Pacific just two in the very first PacWest match of the year.

Garcia led the effort with four aces, tying her season-high, while Bekah Roth added three and Kaitlin O'Brien two.

Sabrina Winslow led Biola's attack with 15 kills on 33 swings (.333). Karly Dantuma was right behind her with 12 on 24 swings (.417) and Bauder also had a standout night with 10 kills on a .529 clip (she was also in on five of Biola's six blocks).

Van Warmerdam parlayed her strong first set into some great final numbers. She was one kill shy of notching a double-double, with nine kills (.400) and 13 digs. She trailed only Sami Hover (18) in the digs department.

No rest for the Eagles as they turn around and leave Biola at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow to ready themselves for a 5:00 p.m. match at Concordia Irvine (7-16, 6-9 PacWest). The other Eagles have lost four in a row and will be eager to attempt to wreck Biola's season-best PacWest winning streak. Follow the match at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/cui/.
