Loss Concludes Hawaii Trip

Hawaii Hilo scored two early goals to take control of play and held Biola scoreless in the Eagles final match in Hawaii.

KEAAU, Hawaii --- The Hawaii Hilo Vulcans continued their strong run to begin conference play on Tuesday by scoring two early goals and short-circuiting Biola's attack to earn a 2-0 shutout win.

Biola drops to 6-4-3 and 4-1-1 PacWest while the Vulcans gain three points to tie the Eagles in the PacWest standings with an identical 4-1-1 conference record.

Hawaii Hilo gained a 1-0 advantage in the third minute, when Jaimie Salas found the top shelf for her third goal of the season. Then Vulcans leading goal-scorer Lucy Maino scored her fourth of the season in the 16th minute when she also hit the top shelf, this time from 30 yards out.

The Eagles produced four shots and four corners to try to mount a response in the first half. But nothing would get by keeper Bailey Cahill and the UH Hilo midfield did a great job of keeping the ball in Biola's defensive half to apply pressure.

The Vulcans' ability to get in front of the ball prevented the Eagles from created scoring opportunities on through balls and forced Biola to rely on corner kicks for most of its offense. In fact, the Eagles best scoring chance came in the 63rd minute, when back-to-back corners gave Paula-Marie Labate an open run at goal down the left endline and created two shots-on-goal.

Biola's initial push toward goal was blocked by the scrum of Vulcan defenders in the 18-yard box. But Sandy Hawryla eventually ended up with the ball at the top left corner of the penalty area and sent the ball on a line toward the far-right post.

Unfortunately, Cahill would come up to glove that shot as she made a total of three saves for the shutout.

At the other end of the pitch, Alyssa Joel helped keep the Eagles in the match during the second half by keeping UH Hilo from scoring additional goals and making a nice save on a shot from Callye Lehmann in the 56th minute that Joel punched over the bar.

The Eagles finally get to return home to play at Al Barbour Field on Saturday after playing five of their first six conference matches on the road. Biola faces the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds at home on Saturday at 7 p.m.
