deMetropolis Delivers In Overtime

Madison deMetropolis buried the game-winner in overtime to help the Eagles snag three points from a tough opponent in Chaminade.

HONOLULU --- Despite the fact that weather condition did not affect the match in the same way Thursday was impacted, the Biola Eagles still had to adjust to their playing surface and a tough opponent on Saturday.

After losing their early lead to Chaminade in the second half, the Eagles dug deep in overtime to come up with a game-winner in the 97th from Madison deMetropolis on a pass from Hali Oakes to grab three more points in PacWest play with a 2-1 victory.

The Eagles took sole possession of second place in the conference after improving to 4-0-1 in conference and 6-3-3 overall. The Silverswords drop to 1-6-1, 0-4-1 PacWest after losing their third overtime match against a conference opponent this season.

"Chaminade put up a great fight and defended us well at times, put us under pressure," said Head Coach Erin Brunelle. "It was a rough game to really have to dig in and walk away with the win so we're proud of the ladies for getting the job done but it did not come easy."

It definitely took a while for the Eagles to get accustomed to the narrow, flatter surface at Saint Louis Field, as a number of passes were pushed too far forward and were difficult to keep at players' feet. But Biola responded to those challenges by pushing forward in attack to produce eight shots in the first half and a goal in the 41st minute by Katelyn Penner.

The freshman midfielder made an excellent step forward for the Eagles as Sarah Yang tapped the ball back toward the top of the 18-yard area. In very similar fashion to her first goal of the season at Academy of Art, Penner blasted the ball to the top shelf to beat the keeper and give Biola the early lead.

Penner's goal marks the seventh time this season that Brunelle's group has scored first and the Eagles now have a 6-0-1 record in those matches.

At the other end of the pitch, goalkeeper Alyssa Joel made good decisions over and again to stand as a brick wall for Biola. Joel made back-to-back saves in the 23rd minute to stuff a breakaway scoring attempt for Chaminade and keep the match tied. And then she grabbed two dangerous balls to begin overtime as the Silverswords surged in attack to try to jump on the sudden-victory goal.

"We came out really flat in the overtime period and Alyssa had to make a few saves right off the bat," said Brunelle. "I think that boosted her confidence and the team in front of her responded well and started to take more of the momentum. It was really a great attack from Hali to go at pace at their backline, a great run from Madi deMo to cut inside and a great through ball in behind that allowed Madi to show her composure and slot it past the keeper."

deMetropolis' goal was her first of the season and the third-game winning goal of her career.

The Eagles will travel to the Big Island on Sunday to begin preparations for Tuesday's match against Hawaii Hilo. Kickoff for the women's match is scheduled for 10 p.m. Pacific Time.

"It's been a good week but we're still a little emotionally drained, being here [in Hawaii] as long as we have," said Brunelle. "We've got another tough opponent ahead of us and we've got to make good decisions before us in terms of recovery and do the best we can through all of the challenges of getting good training on the islands."
