No Downfall In The Downpour

In a match that was defined by heavy rain throughout the first half, Biola responded to an early deficit and earned a 1-1 tie with Hawaii Pacific.

WAIPAHU, Hawaii --- From the start of warmups through the majority of the first half, the dark clouds over Waipai Field No. 6 poured rain on the match between the Hawaii Pacific Sharks and the Biola Eagles.

The teams started the match soaking wet as they stood for opening introductions and quickly found themselves playing in mud. But the conditions would not have their effect on the game until later in the match and into overtime.

The Eagles fell behind just 19 minutes into the contest after Nina Gonzalez scored for the third time in the last three contests. But Head Coach Erin Brunelle's group responded swiftly with a goal four minutes later from Annmarie Alvarez in the six-yard area after Colie Martin and Madi deMetropolis fed her the ball.

It turnout out that the four-minute span between Gonzalez and Alvarez goals would be all the scoring this match would see because the wet conditions and physical play from both sides over a long 110 minute made it too difficult for the teams to get over the hill and find a goal.

After Gonzalez' goal, Viviana Poli would record two saves on HPU shots and begin the change of momentum in the match toward Biola's favor. Following two shots to the Sharks' eight in the first 45 minutes, Biola took nine shots during the second half of regulation compared to Hawaii Pacific's four.

The Eagles two best chances to pull ahead in regulation came from two forwards coming off goals in their last match, Sarah Jeffries and Sierra Rangel. Both forwards found themselves with the ball at their feet in a crowded box and sent low line drives toward goal but HPU keeper Lauren Spencer came up with diving saves both time to spoil the chances.

Jeffries would force Spencer to make another save in the second overtime for the only shot-on-goal of extra time but a win was just not in the cards for either team Thursday despite the valiant effort the members of both teams gave. The Eagles worked especially hard as they pursued their fourth PacWest win, as eight student-athletes played at least 100 minutes in the match.

Biola will have to wait until Saturday to take another attempt at earning its fourth PacWest win. The Eagles will matchup with Chaminade at 5:30 p.m. Pacific Time.
