Biola Gets its 10th

The Eagles beat Chaminade in four to move to 10-2 in conference.

HONOLULU, Hawaii --- A killer first-set comeback keyed a crucial PacWest victory on Tuesday night as Biola Volleyball took down the Chaminade Silverswords on their home floor to get off on the right foot during their Hawaii road trip. The Eagles won in four sets (27-25; 19-25; 25-15; 25-15) to earn their sixth conference victory in a row.

"Getting a win out here is fantastic. Chaminade is a very good team," said Head Coach Aaron Seltzer. "I thought we played very well at times. It was key to figure out how to win game one. That set the tone throughout the match."

Biola did not put its best foot forward to start that first game, making their 27-25 set win all the more impressive. Chaminade won the first three points of the night and eight of the first 10 to take a commanding lead right out of the gate.

The Silverswords were able to keep BU at arms length as late into the set as 18-13. However, a kill from Christina DenBoer, a kill from Brinley Beresford and back-to-back Biola blocks on CUH's best attacker, Emma Tecklenburg, brought Biola right back into it, trailing just 19-17.

Chaminade would rebound with back-to-back scores to extend to a very healthy 21-17 margin. Three Silverswords errors and kills from Karly Dantuma and Bekah Roth helped the Eagles take their first win of the set at 22-21 and then it was pretty much sideout volleyball from then until the end of the set.

Biola managed to fend off Chaminade set points at 24-23 and 25-24 and then managed three points in a row to clinch the set and advantage in the match with the 27-25 win. A DenBoer/Sierra Bauder block was followed by a DenBoer kill to finish things off.

The Silverswords bounced back nicely in the second set, once again getting out to a quick lead and this time not squandering it. The dominant fashion they were able to take the second set made that first-set comeback all the more important.

Then, finally, in the third set it was Biola's turn to get out to the quick lead. The Eagles scored the first three points and nine of the first 11 to force an early Silverswords timeout and take all the wind out of the CUH sails.

After a short burst from the home team, Biola rattled off another five consecutive points in order to change the whole tide of the match and take a 14-4 lead. The Eagles would end up with their 25-15 set three win to once again move ahead in the match. They out-hit the hosts .346 - .074 in the third, which set the tone for a very similar effort in the fourth.

The fourth set had an identical set score to the third and was very similar in terms of final numbers, but it played out much, much differently. In the match's final frame the two teams traded points at the outset and were within two or three points of one another as late as 11-10 BU. Then, a 9-1 run from the Eagles broke the game wide open at 20-11. Chaminade went point-for-point with BU for the rest of the match, but it was too-little, too-late as BU saw another Tecklenburg attack error end things.

The Silverswords' outside led the effort with 14 kills, but she also added seven critical errors to help BU to victory.

Biola was led by DenBoer's 19-kill performance. The sophomore outside was all over the floor all night long, recording eight digs, five blocks, 28 service receptions and hitting a team-best .359.

"Tina was phenomenal," said Seltzer. "She was energetic, up there, and she did very well. Our setters also did a good job of finding what was scoring."

Dantuma was also in double figures with 10 kills (.318). Bekah Roth and Kaitlin O'Brien each had a pair of aces as Biola lead the match with six team aces and just three errors. Chaminade had five aces, but seven errors.

Biola was supported by both the men and women's soccer teams tonight as Head Coach Erin Brunelle and Head Coach Todd Elkins' teams made the trip to Honolulu after landing in Hawaii earlier in the day.

"That was phenomenal," said Seltzer. "It felt like a home game to have soccer come out and support. Kudos to coach Brunelle and Coach Elkins. We wish them all the best this week. We are thankful."

The Eagles' sixth win in a row helps them improve to 14-5 overall and pushes them into double-digit conference wins (10-2). It's a tough trip as BU now has to turn around and play at 7:00 p.m. again on Wednesday night, facing Hawaii Pacific.
