Eagles Bite Back

There was no repeat of 2017 as BU beat HPU in three this time.

HONOLULU, Hawaii --- After four-straight matches of having to put in some extra effort, Biola Volleyball found a way to win in three on Wednesday night at Hawaii Pacific (25-18; 25-19; 25-23). It was the Eagles' first three-set win since beating Concordia Irvine at home a few weeks ago.

The sweep was in major jeopardy late in the third set as the Sharks held a lead as late as 23-22, but a perfectly called timeout by Head Coach Aaron Seltzer helped motivate the Eagles to win the final three points and come away with a critical third-set win.

Winning in three was important with it being the Eagles' second match in as many days and there being just one travel day until they have a pivotal PacWest match against Hawaii Hilo on Friday night.

"I am extremely grateful that we were able to escape that third game," said Seltzer. "We really had to fight to get back into it in that third. I am super proud of them for finding a way to win."

Karly Dantuma had two kills in that streak of three-consecutive points to finish the match. The senior led the team with nine on this night. She also made zero errors for the second time this year to hit better than .500.

What made the biggest difference in this match was the Eagles' presence at the net. The team ended up out-blocking the Sharks 11-2 over the course of the three sets, obliterating their season average of 2.1 blocks-per-set.

Bekah Roth led that effort with six blocks to tie her season-high. Outside of that, pretty much everyone chipped in to get it done.

"It helped me to take a second and slow things down. Looking at the setter to see where she was going to set and then focusing on closing [really helped us to block well]," said Roth.

Biola rolled through the first two sets with wins by a wide margin, but the third set provided a few more stumbling blocks. Hawaii Pacific only managed seven kills and hit -.118 in that third set, but they took advantage of some Biola mistakes on the serve, at the net and setting to nearly steal a set and force the match to four. HPU had five service aces in the match, all five of which came in that third set.

"It's very difficult to start 2-0 in Hawaii. It's very tough. Everyone is good and plays well out here. Hilo is tough, so we will see what happens."

Biola improves to 15-5 (11-2 PacWest) and has its biggest showdown of the week due up next as it faces Hawaii Hilo (12-4, 8-2 PacWest) at 10:00 p.m. PT on Friday. The Vulcans beat Biola 3-2 at home earlier this year.
