Senior Day Ends Sweetly

Wyatt Haccou earns his eighth win of the season.

Jeremy Barth homered in Biola's 16-6 win
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola ended its Senior Day festivities in grand fashion on Saturday by taking the final game of the weekend set with Vanguard 16-6 and the series against the Lions 2-1. The Eagles tried to pull off another impressive comeback in the first game on Saturday, but came up just short in the ninth 10-8.

"These are some of the best teammates I've ever had and it's been so fun to see all these wins come together for us this season," said senior outfielder Daniel Rasmussen. "It was a really great environment to play in today because we knew that we could come back in the last game after being down 2-0. The team knew we had to get to work and maintained the energy we needed to score all those runs."

The split causes both Biola (34-16) and Vanguard (31-21) to finish their Golden State Athletic Conference schedule with a record of 19-11. They are just a half-game back of the 19-10 Hope International Royals, who plan to finish up a suspended game with Westmont this coming Tuesday.

Should the Warriors, who are up 2-0 with two innings left in the game, defeat the Royals, there would be a three-way tie for the GSAC regular-season championship and Biola would take the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament.

Many of the seniors honored during Saturday provided significant contributions for Biola. The aforementioned Rasmussen had three hits during his two starts in the doubleheader. Sam Thorne accomplished the same feat while adding a three-run homerun in game two. And then Jeremy Barth joined the winning effort with a sacrifice fly and a solo shot.

But it was the Lions would not be denied amidst all the pomp and circumstance of game one and the senior day ceremonies. Vanguard scored four runs in the first and three in the fifth against Micah Beyer to force the Eagles to play catch-up the entire game.

Tanner Perry had the biggest blow with a bases-clearing double and left fielder Grady Conner got three base-hits and two runs scored. Outfielder's Brock Eissman's two-run homerun in the eighth ended up being the difference after Biola made it close with three in the ninth.

Ricky Perez had the best linescore for the home team in the loss: reaching base all five times he came to the plate while collecting four hits and three runs.

When game two rolled around, Vanguard kept scoring with one in the second and one in the third against starter Wyatt Haccou.

Biola sparked a rally in the third with a Jerron Largusa single and a Rasmussen double. Then the game started to heat up with the swings from Colton Worthington and Sam Thorne.

Worthington's deep drive to centerfield appeared to be caught on a leaping grab from Eissman for a split-second. But the umpires ruled that Eissman never had control of the ball when they saw the ball on the ground shortly after he landed. Worthington was safe at first with a single as Largusa and Rasmussen raced around the diamond to tie the game.

Four pitches later, Sam Thorne crushed every iota of a 2-1 fastball deep to left to give Biola a 5-2 lead and open the flood gates for the Eagles to score three more in the inning.

In a way, the long frame made things difficult for Haccou to keep his rhythm while sitting in the dugout. But the junior righty was able to strand two men on base and put a big zero on the board in the fourth to set the Eagles six-run lead in place. Following the Eagles seven-run output in the fourth, Haccou threw another scoreless frame on two strikeouts and a harmless flyout to short.

"My changeup worked as a set-up pitch for me and it made my fastball look fast enough to get a few swings and misses," said Haccou. "I was happy with every second I had to sit on the bench because I got to see the guys rack up runs and see Jeremy Barth and Trey Holly hit back-to-back homeruns."

Haccou exited with a 15-2 lead after five innings and improves to 8-3 on the year. He induced 12 swings-and-misses and recorded five strikeouts on his way to a perfect 4-0 record against GSAC opponents at home this season.

Daniel Jang got the last four outs of the game after senior Buddy Brouwer went two-thirds of an inning. Jang threw 18 pitches and had two punch outs.

The Eagles have one more home game on their schedule, this coming Thursday against the Bethesda Flames at 2:00 p.m. They'll also be watching the Hope International game on Tuesday to learn whether their 19-11 record is good enough for the regular-season conference championship.
