LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Ever since its invention a couple hundred years ago baseball has been a sport filled with traditions, rituals and superstitions. This week, as it gears up to make a push for a Golden State Athletic Conference Championship, Biola Baseball has launched a fun new tradition of its own.
Â
The players and coaches came up with the idea of #BuyInBiola to illustrate just how committed they are to one another on and off the field as the regular season comes to a close and games have higher stakes.
Â
If you were around Eagles Diamond at all this weekend you may have noticed a massive uptick in flashy facial hair and interesting hair color. The players all committed to either fashioning their facial hair into a Fu Manchu or dying their hair blonde.
Â
Some did both. Others went with red(ish) hair instead of blonde.
Jonas Wellan crafted a perfectly sculpted Mohawk and then proceeded to hit two homeruns on the weekend.
Â
The point of it is that this wacky event is bringing these guys together and building chemistry at the perfect time. Right when the Eagles are primed and ready for three home games that could determine the GSAC Championship this weekend.
Â
Biola (32-15, 17-10 GSAC) hosts Vanguard (30-18, 18-9) on Friday and Saturday in the final games of conference action in 2017. If the Eagles can win two out of three games they can clinch a share of the conference title and the No. 1 seed in the GSAC Tournament.
Â
The team has issued a call to the Biola student body, staff, faculty and fan base to join them in #BuyInBiola to support the team this weekend and into the playoffs by sporting dyed hair and/or a Fu Manchu mustache. Not even the president is safe...
Â
The series against Vanguard begins with a 3:00 p.m. game on Friday and continues with a doubleheader starting at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Saturday will also be the team's Senior Day! Five seniors will be honored before game one of the doubleheader and five before game two. Biola and Vanguard played three non-conference contests earlier this season and the Eagles won two out of three.
