Resurgent Eagles Sweep William Jessup

Great starts from Micah Beyer and Wyatt Haccou put Biola's GSAC record at 3-5.

Colton Worthing contributed his first homerun of the season to Biola's 8-2 win in game one.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LINCOLN, Calif. --- Biola wasted little time scoring early runs and taking hold of two victories on Saturday. Eight runs in the first two innings of game one, along with a quality start from Micah Beyer, put away a 8-2 win and a Wyatt Haccou complete game finished off the sweep with a 2-1 victory.

The Eagles proved that the iron they used for eight runs in Friday's contest was still hot in game one Saturday. Each of the first five batters got base knocks and the Eagles struck for five runs in the first inning before the second out was recorded. Biola would eventually score six in the top of the first by sending ten men to the plate.

Joey Magro, Colton Worthington and Jerron Largusa all smashed extra base hits in the effort to chase William Jessup starter Cameron Morrow, who was removed without recording an out.

Worthington found yet another firework the very next inning by pulling a ball over the left field fence for his first homerun of the season. Later, a Rawley Hughes double knocked in Jonas Wellan to make it an 8-0 game on the Eagles' 10th hit of the game. That, of course, would be plenty for Eagles starter Micah Beyer and allowed Biola to shift into cruise control for the rest of game one.

Beyer would turn in six innings of one run ball for his third victory of the season, collecting five strikeouts and 11 groundouts. He would only allow three Warriors to reach base on two singles and a hit-by-pitch.

Messrs Gabe Ihrig, Jake Battaglia and Nick Swizek followed Beyer by allowing just one hit between them over the final three frames. Ihrig's performance was most like a houdini act since he escaped with a scoreless frame after surrendering a leadoff triple to second baseman Josh Duitsman. After the triple, Ihrig induced two swinging strikeouts and a harmless grounder to shortstop Ricky Perez to end the inning.

Perez and Jeremy Barth were the other two Eagles besides Magro and Worthington to get two hits in game one.

Biola played a different track in game two, although the early scoring certainly helped again. Starter Wyatt Haccou made two third-inning runs stand up in a 2-1 pitcher's duel between Haccou and the Warriors' Hayden Piner.

The Eagles took the lead in the third on a Barth RBI single and a gift run resulting from a throwing error on a double steal. Biola would not need, nor would it get, anything more than the singles from Barth and Magro in the frame. Piner surrender six walks in the game but was able to work around them to keep his team in it.

Piner's counterpart was simply a bulldog. Haccou did not hand out a single free pass and held the home team scoreless until catcher Dakota Spillers hit a solo homerun while the Warriors were down to their last out.

He was also able to strand runners 90 feet from home in the third and fourth inning, walking those two tightropes without the benefit of a strikeout.

The complete game is Haccou first of the season and the Eagles third this year. Biola improves to 13-7 and 3-5 in Golden State Athletic Conference play while the Warriors are 3-13 and will have to wait for two weeks until they can attempt to earn their first GSAC win of 2017.

The Eagles have four conference games scheduled for next week. They'll warmup for that important stretch with a Tuesday matinee against 7-4 Morningside (Iowa). First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
