Dakari Archer action 2

Men's Basketball

All-Out Effort Comes Up Two Points Short

Biola Men's Basketball had its season come to a gut-wrenching end on Wednesday in KC.

Dakari Archer scored enough to bring his career point total to a rest at exactly 1,900.
Box Score KANSAS CITY, Missouri --- Biola Men's Basketball's 21st and final trip to the NAIA Division I Men's Basketball Championship ended in anguish on Wednesday evening as the No. 14 Eagles suffered a two-point loss at the hands of No. 21 Langston.

The game was tight all night long, but the Eagles could not get up a final possession shot due to a tight press from the leading Lions and BU was eliminated from the tournament in a first round upset.

It was strikingly similar to the narrow loss by the Eagles' women's team from earlier in the day in Billings, Montana and made for a sour end to what's been a pair of remarkable seasons for the Biola basketball programs.

Tonight's game against Langston marked the final time that Dakari Archer, Caelan Tiongson, Jeff Gonzalez, Ryan Swain and Connor Getting would suit up under Dr. Dave Holmquist.

The biggest difference in the game this evening proved to be the depth of the Lions. Langston got 30 points from its bench, including a game-high 22 from Michael Harris to earn the upset win. Harris scored just seven in the second half as BU began to key on him defensively, but he did score the Lions' final five points and was the one to sink what turned out to be the game-winning three.

The game was tense for nearly the entire 40 minutes of play as the lead changed hands nine times and there were 11 different ties. Biola began both halves well, jumping out to a 20-11 lead in the first and scoring the first nine points of the second, but it was Langston who knew how to finish in both periods. LU combined to outscore BU 17-8 in the final four minutes of play of each half.

The Eagles' last lead in the game was at 66-65 with 7:36 left on the clock. A three-point dagger from Renard Green put Langston in the driver's seat and the triple by Harris with 1:33 left on the clock essentially sealed it. Two made free throws by Swain at 1:06 were the only points scored in the final 93 seconds of play.

Biola recovered the ball with seven seconds left on the clock and a chance to shoot for a tie or a win, but the Lions double-teamed Trevor Treinin in the corner and pressed so hard he had no chance to get a shot off before time expired.

The sophomore shooter had a great night that is not to be overlooked as he tied with Archer for the team-lead with 16 points, all from beyond the arc. He also had four rebounds and a block to show off his varied skill set.

Archer's 16 points on 5-of-12 shooting brought him to an even 1,900 for his career. He ends a phenomenal four years as the Eagles' No. 2 all-time leading scorer. In true Dakari fashion six of his points came from the stripe, where he did not miss a foul shot all night long.

Another senior, Jeff Gonzalez, sparkled under the bright lights this evening. The big man was unstoppable down low, pouring in 15 points on nearly 70 percent shooting and bringing down four offensive rebounds and four defensive boards. He also had five assists as he and Tiongson were sharing well with each other all night.

Tiongson would end with eight points and six boards and will definitely be missed on the team in the years to come.

Biola's 2016-17 season comes to rest with a 26-6 final record. The Eagles will fly back to La Mirada soon and before you know it will be back in the gym getting ready for their NCAA Division II and PacWest Conference debut season.

Thanks for the memories, boys.
