Relentless Offense Wins Another Series for Biola

Trey Holly reached base safely seven times during the doubleheader.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola batters made the Arizona Christian pitchers work extremely hard for a split on Saturday, capitalizing on the fatigue caused by 340 pitches during the doubleheader to win the second game 7-2.

Unwilling to lose five Golden State Athletic Conference games in a row, the visiting team stormed back late in game one to negate a great start from the Eagles' Wyatt Haccou and win 8-6. The Firestorm scored seven runs over the course of the seventh and eighth innings after Haccou held his opponents to one run over the first six.

Haccou struck out a season-high five batters during the start and lowered his ERA by half a run to 3.58. He induced seven empty swings and ended his outing by freezing the Arizona Christian eight-hole hitter with a slider to strand runners at the corners.

After Arizona Christian turned a 4-1 game into an 8-4 score, the Eagles still kept battling until their final out to make sure reliever Andrew Mirasty would not be available for game two. With two outs in the ninth, Trey Holly singled up the middle to begin the comeback attempt and reached base safely for the fifth time in the game.

Holly was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two walks in game one and walked two more times in game two. He scored six times during the series to give him 13 runs scored on the year.

Joey Magro's walk was followed by a Jeremy Barth double that made it an 8-6 game. But the Firestorm was able to hold onto the win at the expense of a gassed bullpen that could not hold up to the hard charging Eagles in game two.

Starter Gabe Ihrig also posted a season-high in strikeouts with six in game two and only allowed a single run in the sixth to keep his ERA at a miniscule 0.77. Four of Ihrig's final six outs came via strikeout and he induced six groundouts during his 98 pitch outing.

While Ihrig was keeping the visiting team off the board, the Eagles; lineup was busy building a seven-run lead.

Biola scored two runs in the bottom of the first with the benefit of one hit as Joey Magro and Jeremy Barth crossed home plate. Then Magro would score again during the third and fourth innings while the Eagles got to righty Tyler Domene for four additional runs.

The Eagles sent nine men to the plate in the fourth inning to score three runs and saw Ricky Perez tear up the base paths in the fifth with two stolen bases.

Biola swiped five bags in game two and is now 12-2 this season when scoring first.

Ihrig's third victory of the season elevates Biola to a 16-11 record and a 6-6 mark in conference. ACU's end of the split puts them in seventh place in the GSAC at 5-8 and 14-11 overall.

The Eagles conclude their six-game homestand with a matinee against Marymount California on Tuesday. The first pitch against the Mariners is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
