Eagles Rack Up Runs Against Providence Christian

Four Eagles had multi-hit games in the 8-0 shutout win.

Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola regained its winning and hitting form on Tuesday against Providence Christian, scattering 12 hits with eight walks and getting a great start from Gabe Ihrig to win 8-0.

Ihrig (1-0) threw six scoreless innings with three strikeouts in his first start of the year. He induced nine groundballs for ten total outs and had four innings in which he did not allow a hit.

"I really wanted to throw strikes today and my defense was awesome behind me to get me through six," said Ihrig. "All nine hitters were right-handed for Providence Christian so I was able to limit my options to fastballs and sliders and keep the ball away from their bats."

The trio of Nick Swizek, Jake Battaglia and Daniel Jang took care of the final three innings for the win, facing nine hitters between them without allowing a hit.

At the plate, Biola immediately started things off on the right foot with a run in the first. Sam Thorne made the most of his first plate appearance as a leadoff hitter this season and worked a four-pitch walk: he later scored on a Jerron Largusa sacrifice fly.

Thorne was one of four Eagles to get multiple hits on Tuesday and reached base with every plate appearance, going 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. The senior super-utility player raised his average to .333 and is far-and-away the team leader in runs scored with 12 in just nine games.

The Eagles never played more than two runs in any one innings, but tacked on in every frame from the third through the eighth to raise the score to 8-0. Largusa and second baseman Joey Magro led the RBI count with two each.

The feel good story of the day belonged to designated hitter Colton Worthington, who started his first game as an Eagles on Tuesday after sitting out last season with an injury. Worthington's double in the fourth was one of Biola's two extra base hits on the afternoon as the junior finished with two hits and two runs scored.

"I had seen a pitch in my first at-bat [in the second inning] that I got jammed on while I was trying to adjust to their pitcher. I was looking for that pitch on my double in the fourth and was able to put good barrel to it because it was over the plate," said Worthington. "It felt nice to get two hits and it just feels good to get on the field and play again."
Biola will look to put two wins together when the Eagles face Marymount California Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Wyatt Haccou will get the ball for Biola and look for his second win on the season.
