A Thrilling Plot Twist

Biola reverses a 15-point third quarter lead for Concordia Irvine and wins by 11 points.

IRVINE, Calif. --- Biola made the most of its first in-state road game in over four weeks on Saturday by turning a 15-point deficit against Concordia Irvine into a double-digit victory. The 66-55 result is the first PacWest victory for Biola winter sports.

It is exciting to see the team blessed with an encouraging result against a very tough, well-coached team," said Head Coach Alan Nakamura. " Throughout the game, the team stayed positive and optimistic and kept competing. We hadn't closed out a game well this season so it was nice to see our growth in that area tonight."

On the scoreboard Biola was led by freshman Jazz Benn and sophomore Tatum Brimley, who both scored 15 points in the winning effort. But Biola's players hustled as a collective unit on Saturday and overcame a difficult first half from the field.

Concordia Irvine appeared to be in control of the game at halftime after shooting 44 percent from the field while Biola was having a bit more difficulty with only nine made field goals. But the teams basically switched temperatures in the second half because Biola found its range from beyond the arc.

The Eagles in red went 6-for-15 on their three-point attempts while CUI only made one three-pointer and finished the game shooting just five percent from distance. That clip constrained the home team to eight points in the final 10 minutes and 25 in the second half.

In contrast, Biola made 26 points in the fourth quarter alone. Brimley and Benn combined to score the first seven points of the period to tie the score at 47. Then Danielle Kennedy swished a three-point basket that started an 11-0 run and gave Biola a lead at 50-49 that it would not relinquish. CUI only managed six points over the final 7:30 in response to Biola's 19.

Benn and Kennedy each scored nine points in the last quarter while Brimley added eight and scored all 15 of her points in the second half.

Biola finished out the game by making six free throw attempts in a row and continued its trend of excellence at the charity stripe by knocking down 16 of 19 in the game.

The Eagles will hope to carry this momentum into their next PacWest game, which will take place at Chase Gym on Dec. 16. Tip-off against the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (3-8, 1-2 PacWest) is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
